When Liverpool travelled to Bilbao for the second leg of their European Cup tie in November 1983, one of the main talking points was the man waiting for them at the back.

Andoni Goikoetxea already had a reputation for being one of the hardest defenders in Europe.

Only a few weeks earlier, he had gone through Diego Maradona from behind and left him with a badly damaged ankle that required surgery.

By the time Liverpool arrived at the San Mamés, everybody knew him as the Butcher of Bilbao.

The first leg at Anfield had finished 0-0, so Athletic were confident.

They were the Spanish champions and had not been beaten at home for almost two years.

The San Mamés was packed with nearly 50,000 people, and Liverpool knew exactly what sort of game they were walking into.

Graeme Souness was not especially worried about Goikoetxea.

Before the game, he turned to Roy Evans and told him what he intended to do.

“I’m going to kick him from pillar to post, all across Spain.”

And he had another feeling about the tie as well.

“Evo, if we get through this game tonight we will win the cup.”

Liverpool had trained at the San Mamés the previous evening.

When they came back for the game, Athletic had heavily watered the pitch, something that was much less common at the time.

“That actually suited us down to the ground because we were a passing team who loved a slick pitch.”

“On the night we were fabulous.”

It did not take long for the other part of the contest to start either.

Goikoetxea came flying into Souness with both feet.

Souness took the challenge and got straight back up.

When the chance came to go back at him, Souness went in twice as hard.

Goikoetxea ended up on the floor rolling around hurt.

And after that, the man Liverpool had been warned about barely imposed himself on the game.

Souness took control of the midfield and Liverpool started playing through Athletic rather than getting dragged into the sort of physical battle the home side wanted.

“We as a group were formidable.”

“We had some people who could look after themselves.”

“We had one hat if the opposition wanted a game of football and another hat if the opposition wanted a tug of war with us.”

“I think we were pretty good at both of them.”

In the 66th minute, Alan Kennedy got down the side and put a cross into the box.

Ian Rush attacked it and scored with his head.

They saw the rest of the game out and became the first side to win at the San Mamés in almost two years.

The Butcher of Bilbao had spent the night trying to make his presence felt.

Instead, Souness had taken whatever he gave him, given it back and ran the midfield.

A few months later, Liverpool went to Rome and beat Roma in their own stadium to win the European Cup.

Just as Souness had told Roy Evans before the game in Bilbao.

“If we get through this game tonight we will win the cup.”
