❓Did you know that untreated syphilis in a pregnant person can cause infection in a fetus or infant? This is called congenital syphilis (CS). Infants born with CS can have serious medical problems.

⬆️ CS cases are on the rise in Oregon. Screening is recommended for all pregnant people at the first prenatal visit, at 28 weeks and at delivery.

🩺 Treatment is available if you test positive for syphilis.

OHA and Multnomah County health officials are warning the public about a location where people may have been exposed to measles.

People might have been exposed if they were at the following location at this date and time:
• Legacy GoHealth Urgent Care, 2850 SE Powell Valley Road, Unit 100, Gresham, between 3:05 p.m. and 7:09 p.m. Sunday, July 26

Measles is very contagious. If you believe you’ve been exposed, it’s important to tell your doctor or clinic that you have symptoms of measles before you go. They will give you instructions for what to do so that you don’t spread measles.

The best protection against measles is the MMR (measles-mumps-rubella) vaccine. See less

OHA and Washington and Multnomah county health officials are warning the public about two locations where people may have been exposed to measles.

People might have been exposed if they were at the following locations at these dates and times:
• Randall’s Children Hospital Emergency Department waiting room, 2801 N Gantenbein Ave., Portland:
o Between 8:10 p.m. and 10:30 p.m., Thursday, July 23
o Between 10:51 p.m. and 12:55 a.m., Friday, July 24
o Between 11:36 a.m. and 2:11 p.m., Saturday, July 25
• Providence St. Vincent Medical Center, East Pavillion Medical Office Building lobby, elevators and seventh floor, 9155 SW Barnes Road, Portland,
o between 10:20 a.m. and 12:55 p.m. Tuesday, July 28

People at these locations during these dates and times should call their health care provider right away. Do not go in person without calling first.

🎣 What's in the carp?

🔬At last year’s Multnomah County Fishing Tournament, participants caught carp at Cathedral Park. Oregon Health Authority (OHA) sent 4 carp that were big enough to be tested to a lab. The lab tested for mercury and PCBs (polychlorinated biphenyls).

🚫 There is an existing advisory not to catch and eat the resident fish found in the Lower Willamette River like bass, catfish, and carp because they have been found to have high levels of mercury and PCBs. OHA recommends not eating most resident fish from the advisory area but fish that swim through during their migration are ok like salmon or steelhead.

⚠️The results from the 2025 tournament reinforce the importance of the existing Lower Willamette River fish advisory. The public health recommendations remain the same.

As the weather warms up, now is the time to be on the lookout for cyanobacteria. Cyanobacteria blooms happen naturally in Oregon lakes and rivers.

However, some blooms produce toxins that can make people and animals sick—these are called cyanobacteria harmful algae blooms. Children, people with weakened immune systems, and pets are most at risk.

We recommend that people keep an eye out for visible signs of bloom and stay out of water that looks foamy, scummy, thick like paint, pea-green, blue-green or brownish red.
