"Flood policy is agricultural policy."
We recently brought together our partners at @IowaFloodCenter and @NEIARCD to talk with @thewaterloop on the benefits of multi-cropping in Northeast Iowa.
Here's more on our pilot project: https://t.co/ss1tNLF2Ig
Relay cropping is a promising method farmers use to reduce nutrient runoff into waterways, as demonstrated by @FLOLOfarms.
In Iowa, corn and soybeans dominate, leaving fields bare half the year and increasing nutrient loss.
By growing grains like barley and rye in the same fields, farmers keep the land covered longer, reducing runoff and gaining an additional crop to sell.
Thanks to @floodcoalition, @IowaFloodCenter, and @iowadnr for showcasing this innovative practice.
Barley: ”Oh, hello there! Who are you?”
Pea: ”Hi. I am your new crop companion.”
Barley: “How nice, I always wanted to have a friend.”
Compared to a monoculture, growing two crops in the same field offers various benefits - @jerryalford123 from #TeamLEGUMINOSE explains.
We're looking back at some of the key projects we've worked on over the past 6 years. Here's a resource from our partners at @NEIARCD who we supports on an innovative multi-cropping project to reduce flooding on farmlands. https://t.co/x1t5rbYvC0
#AFCSixYearAnniversary
Cool video!!! This is the result of forward thinkers like @FLOLOfarms and great partners like @IowaSoybeans@floodcoalition and others to see real changes. Well done! 👏👏👏👏👏

Partially funded by the soybean checkoff.
Today they debuted our video - thanks to all the great folks that driven up the road featured at the beginning of the video…. Wether it be to learn or teach-

#relaycroppping hit a home run in 2023
I'm not inventor of this just following in the foots of the great @john_kutz3 and @FLOLOfarms
Things just clicked.. Will probably never happen again

We filled the spot. Thanks to all that reached out. We may be able to get trials setup with others if you're interested. And if you're already doing relays (or multicropping of any kind) share your experience with us!
