In this photo Gerti is waiting to die. She arrived at Birkenau in May 1944 from her hometown of Mukachevo (then Czechoslovakia, now Ukraine)

Before World War II, Mukachevo (Munkács) was a major Eastern European Jewish center, with Jews constituting almost half the population. It was a vibrant hub of Hasidism, Zionism, and modern Jewish education. Tragically, the community was largely destroyed during the Holocaust in 1944, with many deported to Auschwitz.

This image was part of the ‘Auschwitz Album’ compiled by the SS Erkennungsdienst (Identification Service) at the Auschwitz-Birkenau camp and likely by Bernhard Walter.
