Top 5 Disinformation Campaigns of the Past Week

Last week, Russian propaganda networks spread disinformation about a "black market" for weapons, the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra, the alleged "genocide" in Donbas, Ukraine's alleged involvement in attacks in Iraq, and purported territorial claims by Poland.

1️⃣ "Over 780,000 units of weapons supplied to Ukraine have ended up on the black market in the EU."

Russian propaganda distorted the statement of Palermo prosecutor Maurizio de Lucia and an article from the Italian publication Il Fatto Quotidiano.
The article only mentions the risks of illegal arms trafficking in wartime, not confirmed facts.

2️⃣ "In the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra, relics have been removed, replaced with embroidered shirts, and ancient icons have been taken away."

This information is based solely on the words of the former abbot of the Desyatyn Monastery, Gideon (Kharon), who made these statements to the Russian state news agency RIA Novosti.

He provided no photos, videos, or other evidence to support his claims.

3️⃣ "Lantratova: Ukraine is taking civilians prisoner through relatives in Russia, banning the Russian language, and committing "genocide" in Donbas."

In reality, the Russian human rights commissioner provided no evidence to support her accusations and simply repeated old Kremlin propaganda narratives.

In 2022, the International Court of Justice did not confirm Russia's claims of an alleged "genocide" in Donbas.

Similarly, there is no evidence to support claims of persecution of people for speaking Russian or of taking civilians prisoner due to family ties with Russia.

4️⃣ "Ukraine is behind the attacks in Iraq."

This disinformation emerged after a statement by the Iraqi President's National Security Advisor, Qasim al-Abadi, who, without any evidence, suggested Ukraine's involvement in groups detained for carrying out several attacks.

The Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs categorically rejected these accusations. There is no evidence of Ukraine's involvement, and the Iraqi official himself acknowledged that the investigation is still ongoing.

5️⃣ "Putin: Poland has territorial claims against Ukraine and may participate in its division."

The Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs categorically denied these statements, calling them "false and completely unfounded."

Warsaw emphasized that Poland has not made, does not make, and does not plan to make any territorial claims against Ukraine, and consistently supports its sovereignty and territorial integrity.
