The convening of todayโs first-ever high-level General Assembly debate dedicated to crimes that affect the environment focuses attention on the growing link between illegal action, crime and the environment.
It was a privilege to address the assembly on this increasingly complex agenda.
At stake is the orchestrated pattern of illegal activities and crime that transcend local, national and global spheres, profiting from illegal exploitation of the environment and natural wealth, and in turn perpetrating insecurity, destroying ecosystems and livelihoods, doing harm to communities, weakening the rule of law and, in the worst cases, replacing them with criminal networks.
@UNODCโs mandate is clear in this regard: to support countries in strengthening criminal justice, as it relates to their responses to crimes that affect the environment.
We build the capacity of law enforcement agencies, prosecutors, judges, and frontline officers to investigate, prosecute, and adjudicate these crimes more effectively.
By treating these crimes as serious offences, targeting criminal profits and disrupting illicit financial flows, we can put an end to the business model that sustains these activities.
It is my hope that the discussions out of todayโs convening will enable us to achieve a stronger, more coordinated global response, as we work together to protect our planet and its precious natural treasures, for the benefit of humanity today and future generations to come.

Addressing Heads of State, multilateral institutions, and global leaders at the Africa Forward Summit, United Nations Secretary-General H.E. Antรณnio Guterres called for a more inclusive global order - one that fully reflects Africa's demographic, economic, and strategic significance.
Is his remarks, Secretary-General Guterres stated that a system designed without Africa can no longer adequately respond to the realities of today's world. The continued underrepresentation of over 1.5 billion Africans in global decision-making institutions is not only an injustice to the continent, but a deficit for the international community as a whole.
His remarks reinforced the growing call for reform grounded in equity, representation, and shared global responsibility.

We thank the United Nations for this substantial and timely investment. Coming in the context of UN80 reforms, it testifies to UNโs commitment to a multilateralism that acknowledges Africaโs place.
"It will be a moment of reset, recalibration and repositioning. Here, Africa will sit as a co-leader, a co-creator, a co-innovator imagining a new future of this partnership. The decisions taken in Nairobi in May will not be abstract, they will deliver tangible outcomes for and with Africa." ~ Principal Secretary Korir SingOei's remarks on the upcoming #AfricaForward summit in Nairobi.

As we prepare to welcome world leaders to Nairobi on Monday for the #AfricaForward Summit, I take a moment to reflect on what this great city represents.
Nairobi has earned its place through decades of diplomatic leadership, institutional credibility and a bold spirit of innovation that continues to shape the continentโs future. When delegates arrive, they will encounter a confident African capital, warm, dynamic and fully aware of its immense potential.
This city does not wait for others to define its future. Nairobi stands as a symbol of Africaโs ambition, resilience and rising global influence.
That is the spirit Africa brings to this Summit.

Nairobi becomes the convening point for one of the most consequential conversations for Africa in this generation. More than 30 Heads of States, coming together to discuss 7 agenda themes with 1 vision - Taking #AfricaFoward.
We have spent months working to ensure that when the world comes to Nairobi on 11 and 12th May, Africa arrives as a continent with a clear vision of its priorities, and the partners committed to advancing them alongside us.
This is a Summit of substance, one with the potential to define a new chapter in Africaโs global engagement.
