For more than 40 years, Cullen was Optimus Prime, giving the Autobot leader a combination of strength, dignity and compassion that became inseparable from the character. His famous approach came from his brother Larry’s advice: “Be strong enough to be gentle.” That philosophy became the heart of Optimus himself.

But Cullen’s extraordinary career reached far beyond Transformers. He brought melancholy warmth to Eeyore, menace to Venger, comedy to Monterey Jack, and even supplied memorable creature vocalizations for Predator and King Kong.

His absence from the 2026 Emmys’ televised In Memoriam was noticed by fans, although the Television Academy included him in its broader online memorial.

An awards show may miss your name for a few seconds. Real fans don’t forget a voice they carried with them for decades. Rest in peace, Peter Cullen 🕯️
