Excited to share that I’ve joined the incredible team at @Hou_Landing, reporting on all things healthcare in and around Houston!
Got tips, story ideas, gripes to share? I’m at [email protected] and my DMs are open.
#KimOgg blasts commissioners for cutting her budget by $6M. Important context: the DAO was only cut because the agency failed to submit an eligible budget proposal in May, and the county plans to restore a prorated sum of $4.5M to the office in Jan '25 when a new DA takes over.
In my first few weeks @Hou_Landing, I've been digging into city/county finances.
There are billions of $ at play 🫰💸 Our goal is to see where it all comes from and where it goes.
Would love to connect with accountants/finance folks that can help with that. Email in bio📨
During the derecho and Beryl, @MurneyMichael exposed how some Houston senior living communities stranded residents w/o power — including those relying on wheelchairs, oxygen etc.
Now, the city could take action to force better emergency preparedness https://t.co/ealL7hOuyD
Despite repeated pleas, management at these senior living facilities failed to repair flood damage from May's derecho.
Then Hurricane Beryl struck, leaving residents to face worsening conditions.

This quote from one of many Houstonians living in publicly-funded apartments for disabled seniors who were left vulnerable when Beryl struck: “At this point, I’d probably just be safer back living on the street again”😢
Great read from @MurneyMichael https://t.co/McchhAaEwr
After years of health care reporting, I faced a medical emergency of my own this year. It was scary, traumatic, and frustrating because I know I'm not the only woman in the world dealing with it.
My story for @TexasTribune

Local health authorities worry the explosion of mosquitoes after Hurricane Beryl could become more than just a nuisance.
It could also raise the risk of infections of West Nile and other mosquito-borne illnesses. 😳

I'm late to sharing, but wow! @AdrianaRezal's timelapse shows us how much #ColonyRidge has grown (2016- now) using satellite imagery.
It's an excellent visualization of the development's rapid transformation. You can read more @Hou_Landing⤵️

This is the second time in the back half of this pregnancy I've gone through extended power outages in excessive heat due to a natural disaster hitting this city.
I love you Houston, I truly do. But I - and the twins in my belly - are so hot and tired. And we're not alone.
Houston is under a heat advisory. Here are some available cooling centers to escape the heat

Attention fans of pingpong and city government: Allow me to explain the latest whiplash-inducing development in the months-long back-and-forth saga of the Montrose Library in this thread.
We'll start with my latest for @Hou_Landing: https://t.co/oQkwiMC1JX
JUST IN: Social media influencers will be required to disclose paid political advertisements in Texas under a new rule approved Tuesday. Vote came months after we reported that a company quietly paid influencers to defend impeached AG Ken Paxton. #txlege

NEW: Harris County courts ruled against Trill Burgers' favor last week, slapping the viral restaurant with a temporary injunction. Funds from the smashburger joint will be funneled into a constructive trust until the suit's end. More at @chron

SCOOP: According to a preliminary audit memo obtained by the Houston Landing, the Harris County Auditor’s office identified potential double billing issues for a medical director & case manager working for DEMA w/ the HART program.

Heat index peaked at Hobby today at 115°. We did not hit that level even once last summer. As far as I can tell, the last time this occurred at Hobby was August 1998. No previous May instances of a heat index this severe have occurred there.
