⚽ EUROPEAN LEAGUE WEEK 1 — THE BIG STORIES
The new season has arrived, and there was no shortage of drama across England, Spain, Italy & France.
Here’s what stood out. 🧵
⚽ PREMIER LEAGUE
🔴 Arsenal 3–0 Coventry. A perfect opening-night statement as Arsenal began the campaign with three points and a clean sheet.
🔴 Hull City 2–0 Manchester United. One of the weekend’s biggest shocks as promoted Hull stunned United.
🔵 Brentford 3–0 Tottenham. A brutal opening for Spurs, who left with nothing to show.
🔵 Brighton 4–0 Aston Villa. The biggest Premier League statement of Sunday as Brighton dismantled Villa.
🔵 Manchester City 2–1 Bournemouth. City trailed until late before Guéhi and Gvardiol completed a dramatic comeback.
🔴 Newcastle 2–2 Liverpool. Newcastle led twice, but Szoboszlai’s stoppage-time penalty rescued Liverpool.
🔵 Fulham 2–3 Chelsea. Chelsea survived a wild West London derby to open Xabi Alonso’s Premier League era with victory.
🔵 João Pedro scored after just 31 seconds — Chelsea’s fastest opening goal in Premier League history.
🇪🇸 LALIGA
🔵 Barcelona 5–0 Elche. Barça made a spectacular entrance, with Raphinha and Fermín López both scoring twice.
🔴 Atlético Madrid 2–2 Villarreal. Atlético surrendered a lead and were reduced to ten men before Giuliano Simeone rescued a point.
🔴 Robin Le Normand saw red as Atlético’s opening weekend ended in frustration.
🇮🇹 SERIE A
🔵 Inter 4–1 Monza. The defending champions opened their title defence in emphatic fashion.
🔵 Napoli 2–0 Genoa. Napoli also started with three points and a clean sheet.
⚫ Juventus 1–0 Frosinone. Bremer’s header earned Juventus victory, but Juve were wasteful despite creating enough chances.
🔴 Milan 2–1 Torino. Milan began Ruben Amorim’s Serie A reign with an away victory.
🟣 Roma 4–0 Fiorentina. Donyell Malen announced himself with a hat-trick, all three goals assisted by Paulo Dybala.
🔵 Lazio 1–0 Bologna. Davide Frattesi scored four minutes after coming off the bench to give Gattuso a winning Serie A debut.
🇫🇷 LIGUE 1
🔵 Marseille 4–0 Strasbourg. Amine Gouiri scored twice as Marseille opened the season in style.
🔴 Lens 5–2 Auxerre. Florian Thauvin scored twice as Lens produced the weekend’s biggest Ligue 1 scoreline.
🔵 Rennes 2–2 PSG. The champions dropped points immediately after surrendering a two-goal lead.
🇩🇪 BUNDESLIGA
No Bundesliga league fixtures were played this week. Matchday 1 begins on August 28.
