To all young people who want to work but can't find a job, or who are working but can't afford a home, and are wondering why:

This situation had it roots with the last Labour government who were in power when the 2008 crash happened and took decisions we're still paying for today.

The Coalition and Tory governments that followed made it worse, by implementing more policies that pumped house prices but not wages (eg v low interest rates and Help to Buy).

But none of them, neither the previous Tory or Labour governments did as much damage as this Labour government has done in just two short years.

They have stepped on the heads of your drowning prospects to make sure they don't survive.

Yes, it is possible to get into a home for some, but it shouldn't be this difficult.

You are experiencing the consequences of decades of bad government policy, driven mostly by the desire to win votes rather than benefit voters, and it's not your fault.

Do not blame boomers, they didn't make the policies that they have benefitted from (but you can blame them for not recognising how much harder you have it than they did, in terms of home affordability).

For as long as voters keep electing ANY party who will perpetuate these policies, nothing will improve.

We must keep fighting against the demon of debt expansion, (eg Help to Buy, Longer mortgage terms, larger salary multiples) because until lending is reined in, this will keep getting worse.

And the economy and wages will keep suffering as housing hoovers up everyone's money.

Martyna Ogonowska has lost her appeal. This is atrocious. Martyna was just 18 when she was sexually assaulted by a man named Filip Jaskiewicz. A rape survivor, she was carrying a knife, and she stabbed Jaskiewicz once, killing him.

At her trial, the judge accepted that Martyna had been violently and sexually assaulted, but because she was carrying a knife, her actions were considered unlawful, and she was sentenced to 17 years in prison. Worse, she’s still behind bars, while Banaras Hussein, leader of the Rotherham rape gang, is already free on licence.

This is the UK in 2026: a country where a man who doused a little girl in gasoline and threatened to set her on fire spends less time in prison than a woman who killed in admitted self defense.

Today I have published a new report into the refineries sector

"Fuel, Refineries and the UK ETS: What policymakers need to know" finds that the UK’s four remaining oil refineries face a gross carbon cost disadvantage of around £540 million pa compared with refineries operating outside carbon pricing regimes

Even after free allowances are taken into account, their net UK ETS cash cost is c£200 million pa

The follows the closure of the Grangemouth and Lindsey in 2025. Britain is now a substantial net importer of diesel and jet fuel, despite liquid fuels remaining essential to transport, aviation, agriculture, construction and industry

The UK ETS is failing in its intended purpose. Refineries have strong existing commercial incentives to improve energy efficiency, while the major potential decarbonisation options, including CCS and hydrogen, are not commercially viable without significant government support which isn't forthcoming

At the same time, imported fuels don't face equivalent carbon costs and refined products won't be covered by the CBAM, leaving British refineries competing directly with larger and often lower-cost facilities in the Middle East, Asia and elsewhere which don't bear equivalent carbon charges

This creates carbon leakage rather than decarbonisation: when a UK refinery closes, British demand for its products doesn't disappear. Instead, production moves overseas and the finished fuels are imported, potentially from refineries with higher emissions intensity and with additional emissions associated with transporting the products to Britain. UK territorial emissions fall while global emissions rise

The fundamental problem is that the ETS can't incentivise investments which don’t exist. Refiners already have every commercial reason to improve efficiency, while carbon capture and hydrogen are not currently commercially viable without government support

Closing UK refineries isn't decarbonisation - it’s deindustrialisation and offshoring. The UK needs to stop confusing lower territorial emissions with decarbonisation

An environmental policy which exports emissions, destroys domestic industry, increases import dependence and raises global emissions is deeply irrational.

It’s time to abolish the ETS

🚨 Oh this slipped through didn’t it … the Net Zero department (DESNZ) changed some rules by secondary legislation to energy supply licence conditions. Sneaky!

The tightened rules make energy suppliers take “all reasonable steps” (it doesn’t define ‘reasonable’) to install smart meters in ALL remaining domestic premises by 31 December 2030. From 2027 suppliers will have binding annual installation milestones.

The Government explicitly says if progress towards universal smart metering is too slow … it is prepared to introduce “LESS FLEXIBLE MEASURES.”

While this summer has seen the grid going outside safe operational limits, multiple margin warnings, multiple breaches of interconnector trading limits, several balancing system outages and now apparently a cyber attack

Maybe the DESNZ /NESO/ Ofgem cartel should listen to the warnings of the engineers who actually run the grid and get back to taking care of the basics before it's too late because the consequences of failure are no joke
