When magma/lava hits water a spectacular explosive eruption can occur. This was the case at Ruapehu, New Zealand, in 1995 when an eruption began under the crater lake. Those black jets (cock's-tail plumes) are classic signs of this style.

A1. Volcanic ash is a small particle measured at 2mm that is ejected when a volcano erupts.
A2. Breathing in volcanic ash can cause suffocation and can cement your lungs.
