United Women’s Campaign for Women’s Reservation Law without Linkages Meets Akhilesh Yadav in Lucknow
A delegation of women's organizations, social activists, and citizens' groups met Akhilesh Yadav, National President of the Samajwadi Party, on 7 July and appealed for a united voice from opposition parties in the upcoming Monsoon Session of Parliament to ensure that the Women's Reservation Bill is implemented in its original form. The delegation comprised Madhu Garg and Vandana Rai from AIDWA, Kanti Mishra from NFIW, Meena Singh and Sarojini Bisht from AIPWA, Rooprekha Verma from Sajhi Duniya, former SP mayoral candidate Vandana Mishra, and social activist Rita Chaudhary.
The delegation submitted a memorandum opposing the Union government's move to reintroduce the Bill by linking women's reservation with delimitation and the census to fulfil the BJP's political agenda, stating that doing so would delay the implementation of the 2023 Act and also send a dangerous signal for India's federal and democratic structure. The memorandum demanded that the Women's Reservation Bill be passed in its original form in this very Monsoon Session of Parliament so that one-third of the seats can be reserved for women in the upcoming 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections as well.
Akhilesh Yadav expressed agreement with the memorandum submitted by the delegation. He said that his party had opposed the conditions of delimitation and the census attached to the Women's Reservation Bill passed in 2023, even in Parliament. He assured the delegation that, in the upcoming Monsoon Session as well, the SP would demand the immediate implementation of the Women's Reservation Bill in its original form.
Over the last few days, the delegation has also met Ajay Rai, UP Congress President, and Sanjay Singh, National Leader of AAP. They have assured the delegation that their parties will support the implementation of women’s reservation and raise their voice in Parliament. Women's organizations are campaigning on this issue across the country. They will jointly hold a continuous dharna outside Parliament during the Monsoon Session.
