How an Ancient Assyrian Tradition Evolved Into a Christian Symbol of Baptism.

Today is “Nusardil”, one of the oldest Mesopotamian traditions.

One of the oldest surviving pre-Christian cultural traditions which became a Christian tradition. It means something like: the sprinkling of God (“El”).

How did it become a Christian tradition?

In the first century AD, Mar Addai was sent by Saint Thomas to evangelize Mesopotamia & large numbers of Assyrians accepted Christianity.

Because there were so many converts, Addai baptized people by sprinkling them with holy water. The ancient water festival became associated with these baptisms.

A remarkable example of how an ancient Assyrian festival was preserved & given new Christian meaning rather than being abandoned.

One of many living Mesopotamian traditions which prove the continuity of Assyrians from pre-Christian times—despite every attempt to erase their history today as mere “Nestorians”.
