In Senegal, the Bastion of the Region’s Francophonie, French is Giving Way to Local Languages

However, a shift appears to be taking place. While French remains the official language, enshrined in the nation’s constitution, its influence is declining. It is being increasingly replaced by Wolof, the most widely spoken local language. Wolof’s rise is not only evident in everyday conversations, where it has long been dominant, but also in government offices, universities, and mainstream media.

As the French president hosts the annual Francophonie summit north of Paris, Senegal’s president chose not to attend in person, sending the foreign minister as his representative. “Wolof is on the rise because Senegalese people want to assert themselves,” said Adjaratou Sall, a Linguistics professor at Cheikh Anta Diop University in Dakar, who has been studying the Wolof language since 1998. “They want to distance themselves from colonial legacies and reclaim their cultural identity.”

What I loved most about the visit was Her Excellency’s interaction with Senegalese diaspora students. Some have never set foot in Senegal but attended to connect with the country of their fathers/mothers. Our work is increasingly beyond strict confines of academic content. We are literally involved in the promotion of understanding between different generations of the same diaspora(s).
