The #SAPS Phuthaditjhaba Family, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit, working together with the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), successfully secured the conviction and sentencing of 30-year-old Sello Radebe on Monday, 27 July 2026. He was sentenced to 18 years' direct imprisonment for the rape of his niece, who was 15 years old at the time of the offence.
On 6 June 2023, the 15-year-old girl was at her home in Marakong Village, QwaQwa, when her uncle arrived and asked her to fetch his cellphone charger. After she returned with the charger, she went to check on her grandmother, who was ill after suffering a stroke.
The accused later returned to the house, allegedly after giving the grandmother sleeping tablets, and took the victim to a bedroom where he raped her.
The victim further disclosed that this was not the first time the accused had raped her. She stated that the abuse began when she was 13 years old and had continued over a period of time. During the latest incident, she confronted the accused and asked when he was going to stop raping her because she could no longer endure the abuse.
After the incident, the victim reported the matter to a neighbour, who accompanied her to the police station to open a criminal case.
The matter was investigated by Detective Sergeant Malefu Moloi of the Phuthaditjhaba Family, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit. The prosecution was conducted by Prosecutor Ms Nteo, and the case was presided over by Magistrate Msimanga.
