This also takes me back to my friend, who came to my house in 2015 to borrow my Toyota Matrix 2005, so he could visit his then-fiancée's mother, in the suburbs of Ikorodu.

When he returned, my car was faulty, even though I had given it to him in good condition. I called mechanics and consulted almost every expert I could find, but nobody could fix it for three weeks. It wasn't until we employed the services of a car diagnostic engineer that we discovered it was a brain box problem.

Throughout this period, which lasted almost a month, he didn't call or ask what was wrong with the car he had borrowed. I paid for everything myself, and eventually got a new brainbox.

I was only pissed off because he didn't call to show any concern. I called and told him I wasn't happy about that. Even after I fixed it, a few months later, he still borrowed it for his introduction ceremony, and I didn't decline.

Today, he is one of the biggest clearing agents on Tin Can Island, Apapa. His business has earned him nothing less than five houses in the heart of Apapa. He also owns three warehouses in Egbeda, which he bought outrightly.

The last time he came visiting, during my first child's naming ceremony, he saw that I was using a 2009 Toyota Camry. He told me I was too big to be driving that kind of car and that he knew I wouldn't speak up even when I needed something.

The next day, he called, and asked to meet him in Magodo. He bought me a 2023 Toyota Camry, which my wife now drives.

After some time, I asked myself: What if I had listened to the people who advised me to stop lending him my car after he returned it faulty? Would he have thought about me this way today?

Kindness and human investment are the greatest forms of investment. They can yield returns that even Dangote's IPO shares may not match. If you keep getting it clear, keep using it to clear road for people who are in dire needs around you, without expecting nothing in return.

Sometimes, the people you help when they have nothing are the same people who remember you when they have everything.
