Anyone who has passed the age of 30 surely understands the tremendous contribution that Islamic school (Islamiyya) teachers have made in building good character and removing ignorance from the hearts of people.
The hard truth we refuse to admit is that we have neglected these teachers. We have undervalued them by paying them amounts so small that they cannot even buy a bar of soap or a tube of toothpaste.
Even when an Islamiyya teacher is paid as little as ₦10,000, some people still think it is too much—despite the fact that this is often less than the minimum paid to many who teach in conventional schools.
As if that were not enough, we have taken to social media to continue belittling them. Some people even claim that there are women who would never agree to marry an Islamiyya teacher.
It is as though teaching the religion of Allah is considered something shameful or of little value. Yet, some people proudly marry off their daughters to individuals who have stolen public wealth.
At the same time, people expect Islamiyya teachers to abandon teaching, go into business, work in companies, or take government jobs. But how can they spend the entire day earning a living and then return to teach your children as though they were your servants?
Therefore, if people are unwilling or unable to support them properly, then perhaps every teacher should leave the classroom and focus on earning a livelihood. When they return home, they can teach only their own children, for they are the ones Allah will question them about. And when you return home, you can teach your own children as well.
