CEC Gyanesh Kumar Must Resign Over Electoral Purge

The Indian Express investigation has exposed a grave crisis within the Election Commission. Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi recorded objections at least 14 times in 10 months to decisions taken under CEC Gyanesh Kumar, including on the SIR,“illegal” and “unauthorised” changes to Form 6, and the centralisation of electoral-roll software. They also approached the Cabinet Secretary over the concentration of control. Yet these objections were ignored and the SIR was pushed ahead leading to the removal of over 13 crore voters across states and UTs.

The CPI has consistently warned that governments cannot be allowed to handpick voters in a democracy. CEC Gyanesh Kumar has become the face of the electoral purge, eroding public trust in the constitutional body. He has no right to continue, and to restore trust and credibility in the ECI, he must resign. The Supreme Court should examine the decisions of the ECI and the manner in which they were taken. This crisis is inseparable from the BJP government’s 2023 changes to the appointment process of CECs and ECs, which weakened institutional independence. The ECI’s mandate is clear: every eligible citizen must be enabled to vote, and that mandate must be upheld in all circumstances.

Today, at Ajoy Bhawan, we salute the extraordinary courage, determination and fighting spirit of Gen Z.

The resolute youth-student movement that compelled the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan has shown once again that when people unite with conviction, they can shape the course of history. This victory belongs to every student and every young person who refused to bow before injustice.

I was presided over the felicitation programme, moderated by CPI National Secretary Amarjeet Kaur. CJP Chief Spokesperson Saurav Das @SauravDassss joined us and appreciated the role played by AISF and other Left student organisations in anchoring the nationwide youth-student movement. AISF General Secretary Dinesh Seerangaraj delivered the welcome address, while AISF President Viraaj Devang proposed the vote of thanks.

It was a matter of immense pride to felicitate hundreds of young comrades with roses and books alongside my colleagues from the CPI leadership. The programme was attended by CPI National Secretariat members Dr. Bhalchandra Kango, Rama Krushna Panda, Dr. Girish and Annie Raja, along with National Executive members Ravula Venkaiah, Prof. Dinesh Varshney and Nisha Siddhu. The felicitation was followed by inspiring cultural performances and resounding slogans of struggle and solidarity.

The movement has achieved an important victory, but the larger struggle for accessible, equitable and corruption-free public education continues. I have every confidence that this generation will continue to stand at the forefront of the fight for democracy, justice and equality.
