The Sea That Plays Music: Zadar’s Incredible Organ Beneath the Waves
Along the waterfront of Zadar (Croatia) stands one of the world’s most unusual musical instruments – the Sea Organ. Unlike a traditional organ played by a musician, this remarkable creation is powered entirely by the sea.
Designed by Croatian architect Nikola Bašić and opened in 2005, the Sea Organ is hidden beneath a series of marble steps that descend into the Adriatic Sea. Inside are dozens of pipes and chambers. As waves push air through the system, they create haunting melodies that rise from beneath the promenade.
The sound is constantly changing because no two waves are exactly alike. On calm days, visitors hear gentle, soothing tones. During rougher weather, the organ produces deeper and more dramatic music. Every performance is unique, created by nature itself.
The Sea Organ transformed a once ordinary waterfront into one of Croatia’s most famous attractions. Visitors from around the world gather to listen to the ocean’s natural concert while enjoying breathtaking sunsets over the Adriatic.
There are no musicians, no scheduled performances, and no admission tickets. The sea is the performer, and the music never truly stops. It is a perfect example of how art, engineering, and nature can come together to create something unforgettable.
Piazza Navona is Rome’s ancient stadium hiding in plain sight.
Its long, curved shape still follows the footprint of the Stadium of Domitian, built in the 1st century AD for athletic contests and large enough to hold around 30,000 spectators.
