France’s upcoming election “is already bringing the country much closer to a far-right future than at any time since the end of World War II,” writes @Mij_Europe. If France elects “its first far-right leader since 1944,” the resulting shock waves could “extend across Europe.”

I had an excellent discussion today with President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan in Istanbul, focusing on developing the wide-ranging cooperation between Romania and Türkiye. Our countries share excellent traditional relations and a friendship that has only grown stronger over the years. Since establishing our Strategic Partnership in 2011, a cornerstone for the development of our relations, our cooperation has deepened across every key dimension, and Türkiye has become a vital partner for Romania. We have agreed to further increase our bilateral ties, with concrete steps on security, economic, energy and infrastructure cooperation. We will continue to develop our defence cooperation while working together to ensure free navigation and security in the Black Sea, including countering maritime drones via MCM Black Sea and increasing maritime security awareness. Thus, we bring added value to NATO's deterrence and defence posture on the Eastern Flank.
Beyond our bilateral ties, Türkiye is a vital partner for the EU as a whole. As a central actor in Black Sea security architecture, Türkiye plays an indispensable role in the Europe’s defence, and a strong EU-Türkiye relationship serves our shared strategic interests.
Ahead of the NATO Summit in Ankara, we have also agreed to deepen our security cooperation with particular focus on Ukraine, Black Sea security and the protection of our critical infrastructure. We also expressed our shared interest in supporting a durable peace process in the Middle East.
Thank you, President Erdoğan, for this productive exchange. I look forward to building further on our partnership. @RTErdogan
NEW: Türkiye made its first-ever warship export to a NATO and EU member state, delivering the Contraamiral Roman corvette to Romania, while also commissioning the TCG Koçhisar patrol vessel into the Turkish Navy.
Today in Istanbul we are jointly celebrating with the President of the Republic of Türkiye @RTErdogan, our defence ministers and high-ranking military officials, the “Rear-Admiral August Roman” – 261 Hisar-class vessel corvette entering into the service of the Romanian Naval Forces under the national flag. With this new acquisition, Romania proves once more its commitment to delivering on the defence investment pledge made at The Hague and on NATO's Capability Targets thus, significantly contributing to increasing European contribution to the North Atlantic Alliance and to our common security in the Black Sea region, together with the Republic of Türkiye, our Strategic Partner, ally and traditional friend.
Today we have also taken another step towards developing Euro-Atlantic defence industrial partnerships. Romania appreciates Turkish companies for their professionalism in implementing our joint contracts and welcomes the initiatives intended for the development in Romania of maintenance facilities for vessels serving our national defence system.
Through close cooperation, we will be stronger and more effective in the face of security threats in the Black Sea region and beyond. I encourage the intensification of collaboration between our forces, as well as the development of bilateral defence industrial cooperation.
I wish success to the commander and the crew of the "Rear-Admiral August Roman" - 261 corvette in fulfilling their missions, as she joins the active fleet of the Romanian Naval Forces to carry forward a proud legacy of service and dedication to our country!
