A stable Somalia is not about who controls power, but how power is shared, trusted, and institutionalized. The choice is clear:
❌ Fragmented federalism
❌ Centralized authoritarianism
✅ Balanced, inclusive federal system
Policy Brief No.003 — March 2026
Somalia’s inflation outlook is increasingly shaped by intersection of global energy shocks, heavy import dependence and worsening climate pressures. Following the late-February 2026 escalation of the Iran conflict, global oil markets reacted sharply, pushing domestic fuel prices in Mogadishu from $0.60 to $1.50 per litre within days. For an import-dependent economy like Somalia, this shock quickly translated into higher transport, electricity and food distribution costs countrywide.
Even before this external shock, inflationary pressures were building. According to the December 2025 Consumer Price Index from SNBS, annual inflation reached 5.1%, with notable increases in essential sectors such as food, housing, health and personal care. These pressures are now compounded by drought-driven supply constraints, rising freight and insurance costs in regional shipping routes & increased seasonal demand during Ramadan and the approaching Eid festivities.
The combined impact of global geopolitical disruptions, domestic climatic stress and structural import reliance is eroding household purchasing power & increasing economic vulnerability nationwide. This policy brief outlines urgent stabilization and resilience measures to safeguard markets and protect most vulnerable households. @AbdisalamHumbul@abdirahm_omar

Somalia receives around $2B in remittances each year, but by 2023, outward transfers had climbed to $1.85B.
The gap is shrinking, showing remittances are becoming a two-way story. Lots of noise about capital flight. Little proof. Time to dig deeper.
