Jesse Legree scored six touchdowns in his whole senior year of high school.
He has 12 in six college games.
He is a freshman at Oregon State and he leads the country in receiving yards.
Here is the part nobody has told you.
He is the middle of seven children, and his family plays basketball.
He only started playing football in eighth grade, and only because a friend named Mike asked him to. Mike became his quarterback.
His older brother Josiah is a point guard at UTSA.
Here is what Jesse says about that.
"Now, I want people to get to know my name and not just know me as somebody's little brother."
His father Jeffrey coaches junior varsity girls basketball, and he works with the football program at St. Frances Academy on player development.
Jesse was born in Watertown, New York. He went to Loyola Blakefield first and played defensive back.
For his senior year he moved to St. Frances Academy in Baltimore and moved to receiver.
That whole senior season was 721 all purpose yards and six touchdowns. On defense he had four interceptions and six passes broken up.
Nobody offered him a scholarship to play receiver.
Temple looked at him as a cornerback. Pittsburgh was interested. A few schools a level down called.
Nobody wanted the receiver.
Here is the word his high school coach Messay Hailemariam used for the silence.
"Debilitating."
Then Oregon State got interested, late, and Hailemariam kept it from him so he would not be crushed if it fell apart.
Here is the part that stings.
The Oregon State head coach, JaMarcus Shephard, and Eron Hodges had both seen Jesse play before, back when the two of them worked at Alabama. They did not go after him then.
The offer came late on Signing Day. He took it and enrolled in January.
Here is what has happened since.
Week 1 against Houston, five catches for 136 yards and a touchdown. One went 71 yards, the longest catch by an Oregon State receiver in three years.
The next week he had 240 yards. The most by a freshman anywhere since Xavier Worthy in 2021.
He was the Pac-12 Freshman of the Week four weeks in a row. No player in the history of the conference had ever done that.
Saturday against San Diego State he caught 10 passes for 191 yards and three touchdowns. The Oregon State Beavers won 66 to 14.
That was his sixth straight 100 yard game. No Oregon State receiver had ever done that either. He had been tied at five with Mike Hass and Brandin Cooks.
He is on the Biletnikoff Award watch list now. That goes to the best receiver in college football.
He is 5 foot 10 and 172 pounds.
Six touchdowns in an entire year of high school. Twelve in six college games.
Nobody is calling him somebody's little brother.
@CoachChris141@Underdog I think everyone knows smith is the better wr, currently,he’s a generational talent. Obviously that means people are going to compare Legree to him because his numbers and he deserves to be in talks with the best WRs in the country. We all know smith is better but respect Legree!
@CoachChris141@Underdog Hey Coach, let me dumb it down for you. Obviously Jsmith is a better receiver right now and is gonna win the heisman, but Legree is a true freshman having a historic year leading fbs in yards and TDs, and only received 1 scholarship offer. Give him his flowers and stop hating
