The Assassination of Chief Waruhiu wa Kung'u

On 7th October 1952, Chief Hudson Waruhiu wa Kung'u, the Paramount Chief of the Kikuyu, was assassinated along Limuru Road while on his way to attend a Native Tribunal hearing near Nairobi.

A devout Christian, Chief Waruhiu had firmly refused to take the Mau Mau oath. He openly opposed the Mau Mau movement, believing it challenged his authority as a traditional elder and threatened his position as a respected landowner.

That morning, gunmen struck at close range. Chief Waruhiu was shot four times, with blood splattering onto his two terrified passengers. His killing sent shockwaves throughout the colony and became one of the defining events leading to the declaration of the State of Emergency later that month.

During the investigation, Wahinga Waweru Kamundia (33) and Gathugu Migwe (27) allegedly claimed that members of the Koinange family had planned the assassination. According to their statements, the arrangements were made at the Koinange home outside Nairobi on the Sunday before the murder, where they were allegedly handed the pistol that would later be used to kill Chief Waruhiu. These allegations have remained part of the historical record but have long been the subject of debate.

Within a week of the assassination, investigators had arrested several suspects. Among them was Wahinga Waweru Kamundia (33), the driver and registered owner of the Ford taxi used to ferry the assassins. Following his confession, he implicated Gathugu Migwe (27), who earned a living selling second-hand clothes from a small shop in Kabete. Both men had two children each and hailed from Kiambu District.

After a trial before Justice Rudd, both men were found guilty. Witnesses identified them as occupants of the taxi involved in the assassination. They were sentenced to death and were hanged on 7th May 1953.

Chief Waruhiu's assassination remains one of the most significant and controversial episodes in Kenya's colonial history, illustrating the deep divisions that existed within Kikuyu society during the Mau Mau uprising.

History reminds us that the struggle for independence was complex. Different individuals made different choices based on their convictions, beliefs, loyalties, and the circumstances of their time.

Today is one of those days many of you will ask me what the fuck are you smoking, Ledama? But truth be told..
Look at how extreme wealth is manufactured the moment someone is appointed Cabinet Secretary or elected County Governor in Kenya. It is not talent. It is not hard work. It is pure, raw power and we in Parliament have watched it happen for years.

A Cabinet Secretary or a Governor does not simply implement policy. They control the regulations and budgets that decide who eats and who starves in entire sectors and counties. They study the law, locate every loophole, every grey area, every discretionary power we in Parliament carelessly left them and then they quietly position their private companies, proxies, nominees, relatives, lovers and trusted intermediaries to monopolise the opportunities that follow.

Advertising is one of the most brazen examples. Seasoned operators from the big agencies suddenly resign, register new firms overnight, and within months they are vacuuming multimillion-shilling government and county campaigns. The link is almost never written on paper. It is personal. Boyfriends. Girlfriends. New relatives. Old schoolmates. Trusted bagmen. The public pays. The connected feast.
We passed the Conflict of Interest law with great ceremony. In reality it has been little more than a public-relations exercise designed to impress the IMF and foreign donors. We in Parliament know this. True, organised, industrial scale corruption in Kenya does not live in county assembly corridors or among junior clerks. It lives at the apex of the executive and in county boardrooms where the power to write the rules, award the contracts, and direct the advertising budgets is concentrated and we have failed to shut it down. Now ask yourselves a simple, damning question: how many private helicopters have been registered to Kenyans since 2013? The published lists are dominated by politicians and those closest to power. Some individuals own multiple aircraft. The numbers surge around election cycles. These machines are not bought with official salaries. They are flying monuments to the speed and scale at which public office has been converted into private fortune while ordinary Kenyans are ordered to tighten their belts.
This is not governance. This is extraction. Until we in Parliament close the rules that allow those in the executive and in the counties to legislate and budget themselves rich and enforce them without fear or favour the cycle will continue. A small, protected circle will keep growing obscenely wealthy. The rest of the country will keep paying the price. The time for silence is over. Are we really honourable Members ? Distinguished Senators or a disgrace?

They are groomed to continue with oppression, where they take an oath to safeguard the Imperial British East Africa Company Ltd by defending the interests of the colonial masters.

The Presidential Candidates sign an agreement on how to accommodate the ' political competitors' in sharing public resources and defend the colonizers' interests while pretending to be political enemies at the same time.
