I am an African journalist who has covered the continent for 36 years. Today, I want to pay tribute to the South African Police Service for the professional manner in which it policed the anti-immigration protests on Tuesday.

More often than not, we have witnessed brazen and crude police brutality across Africa, from Zimbabwe to Uganda, Nigeria and Kenya. In some instances, the army has even been deployed against civilians, resulting in the killing of protesters, as happened in Zimbabwe in August 2018 and January 2019.

To see an African police service—not a police force—conduct itself with such discipline, professionalism, restraint and humanity is both refreshing and encouraging.
It is a reminder that effective policing does not require violence or brutality, but respect for the law, human dignity and the rights of citizens.

Many police services and forces across the continent could learn valuable lessons from the conduct of the South African Police Service. Maintaining public order and protecting lives are not mutually exclusive.
