One year and five months ago, we reported the terrible condition of Community Secondary School Awotan-Orisun in Apete, Ido LGA, Ibadan, Oyo State. We raised the issue because children were being forced to learn in an environment that was clearly not fit for them.

The classrooms were unplastered, dirty and without proper windows and doors. Some of the structures appeared unsafe, while overcrowding made the situation even worse. More than 150 JSS1 students were reportedly packed into one classroom, with an estimated student-to-teacher ratio of about 150:1.

We spoke about these children because behind every statistic is a child with a dream. A child who wakes up every morning, puts on a school uniform and goes to school hoping to learn, grow and build a better future.

But after all this time, what has actually changed?

From what we understand, the school is still waiting for meaningful intervention.

How do we expect these children to compete with students learning in decent classrooms when they are struggling to learn in such conditions? How can a teacher effectively teach more than 150 students in one classroom? How can we continue to talk about improving education while some public-school children are learning in environments like this?

This is happening while Oyo State continues to receive substantial revenue from FAAC. Between January and May 2026, the state reportedly received ₦131.08 billion in gross FAAC allocation and ₦116.13 billion net.

The issue is not simply about money. It is about priorities and the willingness to act.

Governor @seyimakinde, we reported this school 17 months ago. The children cannot wait forever.

There is growing concern that your attention is increasingly focused on the 2027 presidential ambition and the politics surrounding it. But while political calculations continue, children in Oyo State are still sitting in classrooms that urgently need government attention.

Governance should not take a back seat to political ambition.

These children deserve a safe and decent place to learn.

Please fix this school. They have waited long enough.
