South Africa must be one of the few countries in the world where a multibillionaire President is found with hundreds of thousands of dollars hidden inside his furniture; where a Deputy President owns mansions worth tens of millions of rand; where a police officer can afford a R39 million house; and where a municipal manager spends millions on a London shopping trip using a chartered flight costing R3 million.
Then we are lectured about “fiscal discipline”, “tightening our belts” and “living within our means.” A country where obscene wealth coexists with mass unemployment, hunger and collapsing public services is not suffering from a shortage of resources—it is suffering from a crisis of priorities, accountability and inequality.
No matter how good of a person you think you are, reality doesn't owe you a thing. There are laws to this bish, gravity works the same way for everyone.
This is free advice from an expensive psychologist. If you’re an anxious person, do everything for fun. Go to a job interview for fun. Submit documents for fun. Start a blog for fun. Anxiety feeds on importance. Don’t make everything a matter of life and death.
I finally understand what Machiavelli meant when he said, “Never play fair in a game where others cheat.” It doesn’t mean become evil. It means stop being naive. Stop bringing honesty to people who study manipulation, stop giving access to people who weaponize closeness, and stop expecting clean hands from people who already showed you they’ll throw dirt. Sometimes wisdom is not revenge. Sometimes wisdom is learning the rules of the room before the room uses your goodness against you.
If you happen to be in a position of leadership today, please LEAD and do what you’re paid to do TODAY.
Spare us the sudden wisdom after the damage is done and the cameras are rolling. Save us from all the reflections, the lessons learned, the explanations about what should have happened when you were literally in the position to make it happen but you chose not to for whatever reason. Just save us.
You can’t exercise leadership in hindsight, no matter how angelic you become after the fact. Tragic, I know. But fortunately, you have the opportunity to act NOW. Once you do, your actions will definitely speak for themselves when you’re gone.
And if you ever feel the need to speak, at least tell us what you DID, not what you could or should have done.
With Love,
Deputy Mother❤️
