#TANZANIA: ONE YEAR WITHOUT ANSWERS – THE MYSTERY OF TANZANIA'S EX-AMBASSADOR HUMPHREY POLEPOLE
Today marks one year since the reported disappearance of Humphrey Herson Polepole, a Tanzanian politician and former diplomat whose fate remains unresolved.
Polepole rose to prominence as the Ideology and Publicity Secretary of the ruling Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) before being appointed to Parliament by the late President John Magufuli. Earlier in his career, he briefly served as District Commissioner for Ubungo and Musoma.
In 2022, he was appointed Tanzania’s High Commissioner to Malawi, later reassigned in 2023 as Ambassador to Cuba.
His diplomatic career came to an abrupt end in July 2025, when he resigned, citing the government’s disregard for the constitution and rule of law. Following his resignation, Polepole became an outspoken critic of President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s administration.
On October 6, 2025, just weeks before Tanzania’s general election, his family reported that he had likely been abducted from his home. The incident sparked widespread concern both domestically and internationally.
Over the past year, his family filed a Habeas Corpus petition in court, demanding that authorities disclose his whereabouts and condition. Yet, no official response has been provided, leaving the case shrouded in uncertainty and fueling a broader national debate on human rights, accountability, and state responsibility.
Polepole’s disappearance remains one of Tanzania’s most pressing political mysteries, with supporters, family members, and citizens continuing to demand transparency and justice.
