The Bureau of Reclamation has released the Final Environmental Impact Statement outlining an adaptive decision framework for Post-2026 Operational Guidelines and Strategies for Lake Powell and Lake Mead. The framework will guide operating decisions over the next 10 years to ensure reliable operations and the flexibility to respond to changing conditions and preserves the opportunity for the Basin to continue working towards consensus agreements

The framework will be used to develop operating guidelines for Lake Powell and Lake Mead in anticipated two-year intervals. This adaptive approach provides a transparent process for making operational decisions and allows Reclamation the flexibility to use the best available information when responding to hydrological conditions.

Good news for the West! The Bureau of Reclamation is investing $52M to upgrade Hoover Dam with new turbines built for low Lake Mead levels. These improvements could restore at least 160 megawatts of hydropower capacity & strengthen energy reliability for Nevada, Arizona & CA.

The Bureau of Reclamation is investing approximately $52 million from The Hoover Dam Post-Retirement Benefit Fund to support critical infrastructure upgrades and strengthen hydropower reliability at Hoover Dam.

As prolonged drought and lower Lake Mead elevations continue to affect hydropower generation, this funding will help advance key improvements, including up to three new widehead turbines designed to operate at much lower lake elevations. Once complete, the upgrades could restore up to 160 megawatts of hydropower capacity.

These investments will help strengthen grid reliability and ensure Hoover Dam continues providing renewable power to communities across Nevada, Arizona and California.

Heading into summer, DWR announced an increase to the State Water Project allocation. The allocation is now 45% of the requested supplies, up from the previous allocation of 30% announced on January 29. While California saw record heat in March and early snowmelt, consistent rainstorms in April provided critical runoff through the system that allowed DWR to capture more water and meet environmental regulations without using stored water.
