Omali Yeshitela, 82, is an African American leader, who's been working tirelessly for decades to defend the rights of the poor, the weak and the vulnerable in society, particularly among African Americans, from unjust government policies and the greed of multinational corporations. For two years he's been persecuted as the target of a US government witch-hunt to silence him. He was unjustly charged with a conspiracy against the US using his speech, activism and dissenting views as evidence against him in the trial. The case went to the jury this week. Omali is an old friend and a legend, who’s also been a hero for many. He has been vocal against government overreach embodying the true spirit of a revolutionary and social reformer. During my ordeal in 2003, Omali took to the streets to protest my arrest and government's injustice against me (see photo of Omali here protesting my arrest in front of courthouse in Tampa in Feb. 2003.) In prison, I wrote a poem and dedicated it to my friend titled "Uhuru," which is Swahili for Freedom. I pray for his freedom and safety.

Uhuru is Swahili
For the Arabic Hurriyya
Hurriyya means Freedom

Uhuru to my people
From a life of desperation
Denial of decent education

Of real opportunity to break
From the vicious cycle
Of corruptible poverty
And official brutality

Of forced addiction
To misery and affliction

Of fecklessness and dope
In search of illusive
Deceptive,
False hope

Disappointing leadership
That’s lost its focus
And is confused
Often under attack
Mentally drained
And morally bruised

With the exception
Of the brave few
Their silence is deafening
Old mavericks are betrayed
By the egotistic new

Uhuru to the people
Shall only come from within
Change not your convictions
Nor mask the color of your skin
“I don’t care” is a crime
Apathy is a grave sin

Submit not to the status quo
Don’t give in
Or lay low
Free the spirit from bondage
Don’t put it on hold
Challenge the system
Make a difference

OMALI YESHITELA: AFRICAN UNION WAS FORMED TO DIVIDE, NOT UNIFY

In 2019, at Oxford Union’s debate society, African People’s Socialist Party (@APSPusa on X) founder and Chairman Omali Yeshitela provided an insightful breakdown of why the African Union—originally the Organisation of African Unity (OAU)—was not formed to unite Africa, but to keep the continent divided.

@OmaliYeshitela (X) asserts Kwame Nkrumah (1909-72), Ghana’s first president and founding father of the OAU, held a vision of a United States of Africa that would be fully integrated—politically, socially and economically. Instead, the OAU formed as a compromise due to the ideological differences between the Casablanca and Monrovia groups. The former sought to dismantle colonial borders, while the latter sought to operate within them.

Unfortunately, the OAU fortified colonial borders that have prevented meaningful progress for Africa, leaving the continent divided and economically vulnerable to continued exploitation, which Nkrumah had warned about.
