One reason for this could be that young girls have traditionally been socialised differently to boys, and many appear to be better at ‘masking’ their autistic traits as a result.

5. I’m a woman

This myth stems from the fact that most of the research on autism has focused on young (white) boys. In recent years, it has been discovered that there are many more people who have been assigned female at birth who are autistic.

4. I’m independent

I have studied the world intensely all of my life, and I understand how a lot of processes function, so I can interact successfully in many different environments. However, I struggle to cope in new and very different or unexpected situations.

3. I am sarcastic

I have a sense of humour, and sometimes the jokes I make are sarcastic. Sarcasm is something I did not naturally understand, but through experience and trial and error, I now find sarcasm relatively easy to spot, and I know how to use it.
