I’ve noticed an interesting correlation recently:
The more expertise somebody has about social media the less value they place on follower counts.
They realize it’s an overrated vanity metric.
Meanwhile, social media amateurs are obsessed with follower counts.
Great point from @iSocialFanz in #SMMW19 talk:
Most people spend more time thinking about how to respond to negative comments than positive ones.
That should be flipped.
If I were speaking at #SMMW19, I’d talk about how to create a social media post 100% of your followers will like.

This is possibly the best and worst time in history to start a social app
Best because incumbents are vulnerable
Worst because venture funding environment for social is weakest its been since 2005
Social is being reinvented as we Tweet
Today’s social internet:
- Broadcast
- Ad-driven
- Small # of incumbents
- Highly curated
Tomorrow’s social internet:
- Group chat, multiple identities
- Paid monthly sub
- Audio, video, avatar first
- Successful mid-size apps
- Highly raw
The future couldn't come sooner

Post it in a sentence as an Instagram post or tweet it.
See how people respond.
If it resonates, flesh out into a full blog post.

Social media's really complicated, but it's also really simple.
Just share something of value, something that's useful to a specific audience and put it in front of that audience and it works.
Every. Time.
A simple way to improve your social media content:
Make it about your audience, not about yourself.
The more you address your audience’s problems, interests, and passions, the more they’ll care.
