What happens after a senator dies?
In most cases, the governor of the state that the deceased senator represented has the authority to appoint a replacement to complete the term or serve until the next special election.
Following the death of Sen. Dianne Feinstein, California Gov. Newsome appointed Laphonza Butler to fill the seat until November 2024, when the election to decide who will serve the final 2 months of the late senator’s term will occur.
