Lexington went $850,000 into debt paying a California artist to create this monument celebrating Lexington's 250th anniversary.

Not only does this... thing look like it's a dedication to Mardi Gras and not the city of Lexington, but by law, the city went into debt to pay for it.

It is law in Lexington and many other Kentucky cities that every time they borrow money, 1% must be set aside for the arts.They literally have a law requiring them to go into debt to fund art projects.

The total cost of the project was $900,000 with $850,000 of it coming from bond revenues.

Don Combs, trainer of  Robert and Verna Lehmann's Dust Commander, the longshot Kentucky Derby winner in 1970, passed away following a massive stroke Sunday at Sayre Christian Village in his hometown of Lexington, Ky. He was 86.
