Prenatal Tylenol causing autism? I won't cry if #TYLENOL#acetaminophen disappears tomorrow, but for the record (detailed below):
1. Basic point: Correlation โ Causation.
2. Peer-reviewed point (reference below): Questionable handling of limitations + data misinterpretation
1. Basic point: Correlation โ Causation.
Words like "may," "potential," "plausible," & "associated" in medical literature โ causation. Treating them synonymously is not true, especially in medicine containing a๐of nuances.
Every time a likeable public influencer throws around the "cause" word in its various inflections while talking about medicine, health, or my realm based on their anecdotes and misinterpretation of studies, makes me feel like a small part of me died just a little bit more.
2. Peer-reviewed point (study referenced below): Ethical concerns about how limitations were handled in this study + Objective misinterpretation of data among the public.
Though I credit Dr Prada & his colleagues for a methodological review, there is a significant concern that he did not sufficiently address with evidence that is concerning: graph of risk-of-biases for autism is extremely high with confounding ~50% & exposures to near 90% (i.e. very high misclassification of exposures, selection biases, and confounders). What immediately came to mind were genetics (esp siblings), male sex, complications with pregnancies that involve unusual pain or fevers when Tylenol is often given (preterm deliveries, infections)-which are ALL known individual risks for autism.
In assessments of residual confounding section, he discusses these confounders and states that the associations persisted after controlling for confounders and risk factors. Sounds convincing, at surface level, until trying to make sense of it. What's odd in this section was his lack of objectively showing how he controlled for those and his unusual lack of specific references about which studies he was alluding to with "some studies" to make those new points (he made references with new points in all other sections; none in this entire section; odd change for a person with M.D. & PhD credentials). This implies that he is referencing studies outside and out-of-context to this study to refute confounders/biases in his own study, which the confounders/biases objectively shown in his study still holds & greater concerns of manipulation of data due to this behavior
My suspicion: if those were included, the study design or correlation won't hold (but being fully truthful here won't elevate your prestige and $, right?)

@DrJosefWD What study is this cited from and how'd you know if poor deep sleep was not already happening from the depression alone. SSRI which we know generally takes about that long to even have a sense of its full effects.
@tylerblack32 If I recall correctly, Thorazine came out around the same time as deinstitutionalization started with the push to manage SMI outside locked settings during then.
How to discredit yourself: misinterpret study regardless if study spells it out telling you otherwise then spread false information to feed into negative and incorrect assumptions. Idc to prescribe SSRIs or not but dont spread lies esp as a physician. This is sad
NEW STUDY:
-Children with prenatal exposure to antidepressants (mostly SSRIs) had an increased risk of Autism, ADHD, & behavioral-emotional-social difficulties.
These findings are consistent with antidepressant effects on fetal neurodevelopment.
Both maternal depression and antidepressant exposure were associated with increased risk, but the increase was greater with antidepressants than with untreated depression.
"Antidepressant exposure was associated with a 2.9% increase in absolute risk of special educational need among those exposed to depression."
"Antidepressant medication exposure without a record of depression was also associated with increased risk."

@AdamUrato1 That is not what this study is saying. It is a shame that another physician colleague is willingly misinterpreting this paper, which the conclusion spells out, and spreading misinformation to confirm their own biases.
@NancyMace@realDailyWire Fathers getting ignored despite both parents suffering over their children is much more common than most women are aware. Replies about suffering dads are usually criticism and making it about mom/women again.
Here's the first case reports of mania on lumateperone (Caplyta).

@JosephFordCotto Over-identification bias confusing their own experiences and understanding about PPP = Lindsay's experience, which is completely off and easy for her to exploit.
