Ol Kalou isn't just voting for an MP today.

It's become one of the biggest political tests in Kenya before the 2027 General Election.

On paper, it's a parliamentary by-election.

In reality, many Kenyans see it as a contest that could signal where Mt. Kenya politics is heading.

The seat became vacant following the death of MP David Kiaraho, and today thousands of registered voters are casting their ballots across the constituency. The race has largely narrowed into a battle between UDA's Samuel Muchina Nyagah and DCP's Sammy Kamau Ngotho, though nine candidates are on the ballot.

Beyond the candidates, this election has attracted national attention because many political observers view it as a proxy contest between President William Ruto's camp and former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua's allies.

Unfortunately, the campaign period has also been marked by concerns over violence, intimidation, voter bribery allegations and heightened political tensions. The IEBC, KNCHR, KHRC and other institutions have repeatedly appealed for peace and urged all sides to respect the democratic process.

Whatever your political preference is, one thing should unite every Kenyan:

Elections should be decided by the ballot—not by violence, fear or misinformation.

When the votes are counted, one candidate will win.

But Ol Kalou will still be one community.

Neighbours will remain neighbours.

Businesses will reopen.

Children will return to school.

Life will go on.

That is why peaceful participation matters more than political rivalry.

As the counting process unfolds, let's allow the IEBC to complete its work and rely on official results rather than rumours circulating on social media.

Democracy is strongest when people can compete fiercely during campaigns and still accept the outcome peacefully.
