When you get to my age certain things become clearer than ever before.
My lifetime has taught me to embrace freedom, democracy, and a future based on the core values that have defined America.
Honesty.
Decency.
Dignity.
Equality.
President Biden crushed it tonight. It was strong, candid, and exactly what our nation needed to hear. I’m so proud of his forthright address. Political? Show me a State of the Union that wasn’t political. Fair and necessary? Absolutely. Great job, Mr. President. #UTpol
Diversity, Equity and Inclusion should not be bad words. Americans have historically understood these terms to be virtuous, but increasingly in our state and country, these words have become triggering and divisive. Equality Utah supports efforts to make our educational institutions places where a diverse student population can thrive and learn from one another. We also support efforts to ensure freedom of speech is afforded to all speakers so as to allow our students to be challenged and learn from one another. It shouldn’t be an either/or scenario. We can champion viewpoint diversity as well as a campus environment where students are welcomed regardless of their race, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, religious affiliation, nationality and political ideology.
We are particularly concerned with the provisions in HB 261 that dismantle DEI offices on college campuses. This is a step too far. These offices help create climates of belonging, improve performance outcomes and graduation rates for minority students.
We are equally concerned about provisions impacting so-called DEI training, because we believe it is possible to talk about creating inclusive workplaces, including on campus, in ways that respect and celebrate the diversity of every participant. This is a perfect opportunity for state leaders to ratchet down the polarizing rhetoric and employ the “Utah Way” to bring diverse stakeholders together and build upon the values we all share.
HB 261 will be heard today at 2pm in the House Education Committee at 30 House Building. Please contact your representative and share your concerns. #EqualityUtah #Utah

This is a stark warning about the consequences of ignoring censorship, the loss of individual rights, the suppression of dissent, & other authoritarian tactics EVERY American should be aware of. Fascism in the U.S. has already started.
