2026 Nigeria HIV Prevention Conference: Building to Last! 🔴✨
We are excited to officially announce the 2026 Nigeria HIV Prevention Conference, hosted by Temitope Ilori Director General of the National Agency for the Control of AIDS (NACA).
Under the theme:
“Building to Last: Re-Imagining HIV Prevention Strategies in Nigeria,” this pivotal gathering will bring together key stakeholders, policy leaders, healthcare experts, and partners to chart sustainable, innovative pathways for HIV prevention across the nation.
Lenacapavir, is an antiviral medication used for HIV treatment and prevention (PrEP)
👉Generic name: Lenacapavir
👉Brand names: Yeztugo (HIV prevention) and Sunlenca (HIV treatment)
👉Drug class: HIV capsid inhibitor.
*👉HIV prevention: Yeztugo is a long-acting injectable PrEP option that can be administered every six months, following the recommended initiation regimen.
👉HIV treatment: Sunlenca is used with other antiretroviral medicines for certain people with HIV whose infection is resistant to multiple treatments.
👉How it works: It interferes with the HIV capsid, a protein structure the virus needs to replicate.
👉Important precautions: HIV testing is required before starting PrEP. Drug interactions, missed doses, and injection-site reactions are important considerations.
👉Limitations: It does not cure HIV or protect against other sexually transmitted infections. Condoms is still useful for STI prevention.
👉HIV testing: You must test HIV-negative before starting it for prevention
👉Clinical assessment: A qualified provider should review your medical history, current medications, and suitability for injectable PrEP.
👉Prescription and administration: It should be initiated through an authorised healthcare service, following the applicable Nigerian guidelines and product instructions.
👉Follow-up: You must return for scheduled injections and HIV testing. The six-monthly injection does not eliminate the need for follow-up care.

SOLUDO’S HEALTHY WORKPLACE DRIVE: ANSACA EXPANDS FREE HEALTH SERVICES TO NWOKE UDI
By Obianuju Isima
The Anambra State AIDS Control Agency (ANSACA) has extended its Healthy Workplace Compliance Initiative to Nwoke Udi Palmwine Bar, Awka, providing workers with free HIV counselling and testing alongside other integrated preventive health services.
The outreach, held on September 25, featured HIV testing and counselling, hepatitis B and C screening, tuberculosis and malaria screening, health education, preventive counselling and referral services.
The initiative aligns with the workplace health drive of the Anambra State Government under Governor Prof. Chukwuma Charles Soludo, CFR, aimed at promoting a healthier and more productive workforce across the state.
Speaking during the exercise, the Executive Director/Project Manager of ANSACA, Dr. Nkem Okeke, said taking preventive healthcare directly to workplaces removes barriers to accessing essential services and encourages early detection and timely referral.
“A healthy workplace contributes to a productive workforce. Our goal is to bring HIV prevention, testing and other essential health services closer to people where they work, while promoting a culture of prevention and regular health checks,” Dr. Okeke said.
The health education session addressed HIV prevention, abstinence, safer sexual practices and the correct and consistent use of male and female condoms. Workers were encouraged to know their HIV status, with those who test positive linked to appropriate care and treatment, while those who test negative receive guidance on remaining HIV-negative.
A major component of the programme is the Healthy Workplace Compliance Certification, which recognises workplaces that participate in ANSACA’s workplace health process and demonstrate commitment to the health and wellbeing of their employees.
Dr. Okeke explained that the certification goes beyond a one-day outreach, as it seeks to encourage organisations to make workforce health, HIV awareness, prevention and access to appropriate services part of their workplace culture.
ANSACA has already extended the initiative to Chiben Leisure Hotel and Naira Rice, with plans to reach water factories, hospitality establishments, industries and other workplaces across Anambra State.
The agency is also strengthening inter-agency collaboration to expand the programme, including engagement with the Anambra State Ministry of Environment to complement environmental compliance efforts with workplace health interventions.
Dr. Okeke called on businesses and organisations across the state to embrace the initiative, assuring that ANSACA would continue taking free HIV prevention, testing, health education, screening and referral services closer to workers and communities.
The initiative forms part of ANSACA’s broader drive to strengthen HIV prevention and contribute towards the goal of Zero New HIV Infections in Anambra State by 2030.

HIV QUESTIONS YOU’RE TOO SHY TO ASK
Can I have sex with someone living with HIV? YES.
When HIV treatment keeps the viral load undetectable, HIV is not sexually transmitted.

In our continued efforts towards strengthening Government ownership and sustainability of Nigeria’s HIV response, I paid an advocacy visit to the Honourable Minister of Finance, Mr. Taiwo Oyedele.
Workplaces became important spaces for reaching people with accurate health information during the COVID-19 response in Nigeria.
Under the Global Fund COVID-19 Response Mechanism (#C19RM), implemented by @NACANigeria with support from @GlobalFund, 600 workplace peer influencers were engaged to drive routine campaigns for COVID-19 testing and vaccination.
It was a pleasure to join the APIN family at the inaugural lecture of Prof. Prosper Ifeanacho Okonkwo, titled " *Beyond Molecules: From Science to Sustainable Impact in Nigeria’s HIV Response",* held at Bingham University, Nasarawa State.
