As governments, regulators and AI companies grapple with how to manage the risks and opportunities presented by rapidly advancing #AI, revisit findings from the latest #BritishSocialAttitudes chapter on Artificial intelligence, co-authored by researchers from @AdaLovelaceInst and @turinginst, using NatCen Panel data.

👉 The research found that support for AI regulation spans the political divide and that around 7 in 10 people would feel more comfortable with AI technologies if they were governed by laws and regulations.

👉 It also found that many people want humans, as well as machines, to remain accountable for decisions made using AI, particularly in high-impact areas such as justice and welfare.

.#BritishSocialAttitudes has tracked views on assisted dying for three decades. As parliamentarians return to this debate, see what the BSA has been showing for the past three decades.

Our latest data shows that support remains high for assisted dying where someone has an incurable and painful illness and is expected to die within the next few months (79%). Support for assisted dying 'for a person with an incurable and painful illness who will not die', has increased since the mid-1990s, reaching 62% in 2025.

NatCen is proud that our Five to Twelve longitudinal study is already informing government policy on educational inequality.

Education Secretary Lucy Powell this week said: "Our landmark study lays bare a stark truth. As early as age five or six, poorer children are already more than twice as likely to be in the bottom set for Maths and English compared to their better-off classmates," adding that "this study will continue to hold me, and this government, to our word."

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗱𝗼𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝘂𝗯𝗹𝗶𝗰 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗸 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘃𝗮𝗹𝘂𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗵𝗶𝗴𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝗲𝗱𝘂𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻?

As debate continues over the value of academic education and the need for more vocational skills and opportunities for young people, the latest research from British Social Attitudes unpacks how the public views higher education.

Public confidence in the value of higher education has changed over time. In 2005, 14% agreed that 'a university education just isn’t worth the amount of time and money it usually takes'. By 2025, this had risen to 34%.

These results align with a separate question that asked whether, ‘thinking about the cost of a university education nowadays’, a degree represents ‘good value for money’ - as many as 77% say that it does not.
