Report to the British Prime Minister and House of Lords Regarding the Abandonment of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu in Nigerian Detention
To: The Rt. Hon. Sir Keir Starmer, Prime Minister of the United Kingdom
X Handle: @Keir_Starmer
Cc: The House of Lords, United Kingdom
X Handle: @UKHouseofLords
Subject: Urgent Appeal for Action on the Detention of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, a British Citizen
Date: February 9, 2025
Dear Prime Rt. Hon. Sir Keir Starmer, and Members of the House of Lords,
It is with great concern that I bring to your attention the prolonged detention of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, a British citizen, by the Nigerian government. This situation represents not only a violation of Mr. Kanu's human rights but also raises questions about the commitment of the British government to protect and uphold the rights of its citizens abroad.
Background
Mazi Nnamdi Kanu is the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), a group advocating for self-determination in southeastern Nigeria. As a dual citizen of Nigeria and the United Kingdom, Mr. Kanu was arrested in June 2021 under controversial circumstances described as extraordinary rendition, which violates international law. He has since been held in solitary confinement by the Nigerian Department of State Services (DSS), despite multiple court rulings ordering his release.
Violations of Rights
1. Unlawful Detention: Nigerian courts, including the Court of Appeal, have ruled that Mr. Kanu's detention is illegal, yet these rulings have been ignored by the Nigerian authorities.
2. Torture and Inhumane Treatment: Reports from IPOB legal representatives indicate that Mr. Kanu has been subjected to poor detention conditions, which amount to psychological and physical torture.
3. Denial of Consular Access: Despite his status as a British citizen, Mr. Kanu has been denied consistent access to British consular support, further compounding his plight.
British Government's Duty
As a citizen of the United Kingdom, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu is entitled to the full protection of Her Majesty’s Government, as enshrined in the Vienna Convention on Consular Relations (1963). The lack of decisive action from the British government undermines the trust that citizens place in their nation to protect them, regardless of where they are.
Appeal for Immediate Action
1. Demand Compliance: The British government must demand that Nigeria complies with its court orders and international human rights obligations by releasing Mr. Kanu unconditionally.
2. Provide Consular Support: Ensure that Mr. Kanu receives regular visits and assistance from British consular officials.
3. Engage Diplomatically: Leverage diplomatic channels to press Nigeria to resolve this issue swiftly and fairly.
4. Advocate for Rule of Law: Reaffirm the UK's commitment to upholding the rule of law and protecting its citizens from arbitrary detention, regardless of the political complexities involved.
Public Sentiment and Repercussions
The prolonged silence and perceived inaction by the UK government have drawn criticism from human rights organizations and the global community. This situation could erode public confidence in the UK's foreign policy and its ability to defend its citizens abroad.
Conclusion
As the Prime Minister and custodians of the British legal and moral compass, you have an obligation to act decisively on this matter. The continued detention of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu is a blight on the principles of justice and human rights that the United Kingdom stands for. Your immediate intervention is not just a moral necessity but a legal duty.
I trust that this report will prompt swift and decisive action to ensure the release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu and the restoration of his fundamental rights.
Yours sincerely,
Elochukwu Nicholas Ohagi

ARREST OF CHIEF CHIDOZIE NWANGWU (ALIAS AKWA OKUKO TIWARA AKU) - A GRAVE VIOLATION OF HIS CONSTITUTIONALLY GUARANTEED RIGHTS TO FREEDOM OF WORSHIP AND EXPRESSION:
It is deeply concerning that Chief Chidozie Nwangwu, popularly known as Akwa Okuko Tiwara Aki, has been unlawfully arrested by the Anambra State Government. This egregious act not only tramples on his fundamental rights but also raises serious questions about the abuse of state power for political or personal vendettas.
A few weeks after the establishment of the Agunechemba Security Outfit, I expressed concerns about the potential misuse of the outfit for settling political scores - concerns that, unfortunately, are now being debated.
Since news of Akwa Okuko’s arrest broke, my phones have been flooded with calls and messages from concerned individuals, all questioning the legality of his detention. Upon further inquiry, I learned that he was invited for a meeting by the Deputy Governor of Anambra State, who personally called him. However, rather than a routine engagement, this invitation appears to have been a trap - one that has now led to his unjust detention.
The crux of the matter lies in a trending undated video in which Akwa Okuko allegedly spoke about preparing a substance called "Okeite." Notably, I was made to understand that this video was neither released on his official platforms nor promoted by him. However, even if we assume - without conceding - that he made such statements, the fundamental question remains: What crime has he committed?
Legal and Constitutional Violations:
Sections 38, 39, and 40 of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended) provide clear, extensive, and unequivocal protections for every citizen’s freedom of thought, conscience, religion, and expression. These rights are sacrosanct and can not be arbitrarily infringed upon by any government, authority or local laws.
Specifically:
Section 38 guarantees the right to practice and propagate one’s religion freely, whether in private or in public, alone or with others.
Section 39 upholds the right to freedom of expression, including the right to hold opinions and disseminate information without interference.
By unlawfully detaining Chief Chidozie Nwangwu based on his religious and personal declarations - whether actual or perceived - the Anambra State Government has blatantly violated these constitutional rights.
Who is Akwa Okuko?
Chief Chidozie Nwangwu is a renowned and successful traditional doctor, widely recognized for his metaphysical beliefs by his adherents.
Contrary to the misconceptions being peddled, I have been reliably informed that he has consistently discouraged individuals without legitimate means of livelihood from seeking his services. I was further informed that he has publicly declared that only those engaged in genuine trade or business should consult him, demonstrating a strong ethical stance in his practice.
If his arrest is indeed linked or limited to the aforementioned viral video, then this amounts to an unlawful detention and must be unequivocally condemned. His continued incarceration represents a gross violation of his fundamental rights and an abuse of power by the Anambra State Government.
Concerns About the Agunechemba Security Outfit:
I have been a strong advocate of the Agunechemba Security Outfit, having publicly commended its launch as a necessary step toward tackling criminal activities by non-state actors that had previously terrorized our dear state.
There were initial concerns that the security initiative lacked timely state support, allowing criminals to wreck havoc before Governor Soludo finally intervened. Now, with the 2025 Anambra gubernatorial election approaching, it appears that the goalpost is shifting - raising suspicions of political manipulation.
Any attempt to use Agunechemba as a tool for silencing perceived political opponents will be roundly resisted by well-meaning Anambrarians.
Call for Immediate and Unconditional Release:
Given these troubling developments, I call on the Anambra State Government to immediately and unconditionally release Chief Chidozie Nwangwu. His detention is not only illegal but also sets a dangerous precedent for the suppression of religious and expressive freedoms in our state.
Agunechemba Security Outfit should remain focused on its core mandate - combating crime - and not being hijacked for political witch-hunts. If the state government attempts to subvert its original purpose, the people of Anambra will resolutely reject such misdirection.
Let wise counsel prevail.

The police in Nigeria has done the job of oppressing Nigerians more than they’ve done the real job of policing.
The police in Nigeria has done the job of dehumanizing Nigerians more than they’ve protected them from harm.
The police in Nigeria has done the job of abusing and violating the rights of Nigerian citizens more than they’ve protected the rights of the citizens.
Which security agency around the world operates like common criminals ? Which security agency around the world violates the laws it’s meant to enforce ?
IGP Kayode Egbetokun will go down in history as the most brutal, most unlawful, most indecent and most irresponsible police Inspector General in the history of Nigeria. Even the Police under the successive military regimes in Nigeria acted more civil and responsible than the Police is acting today under Egbetokun.
IMPUNITY: POLICE REARREST TIKTOKER SEAKING IN COURT, FLIES HIM TO ABUJA
We were before the Magistrate Court of Lagos State sitting in Ogba today, Thursday the 6th day of February, 2025 in respect of the remand proceedings instituted by the Nigeria Police Force against our client, Mr. Olumide Ogunsanwo alias Seaking.
After the day’s proceedings, Seaking was rearrested within the court premises and taken to the State Police Command, Ikeja before he was subsequently taken to the Murtala Muhammad Airport from where he is being flown to Abuja.
Seaking was first arrested on 20th December, 2024 and taken before the Magistrate Court on 23rd December, 2024 for remand. We opposed the application for remand for 30 days and the court refused the application.
The Learned Magistrate admitted Seaking to bail and ordered the police to forward a duplicate copy of the case file to the DPP for legal advice. The matter was then adjourned to 16th January, 2025 for report of the DPP Advice.
On 16th January, 2025, we were in court with Seaking but there was no representation for the prosecution. The court further adjourned the proceedings to today, 6th February, 2025.
A police prosecutor appeared today and pleaded for adjournment to enable them file proof of compliance with the order of the court. The Magistrate granted the application and gave the police seven days to file proof of compliance. The case was then adjourned to the 25th day of March, 2025 for report of compliance.
It is utterly condemnable that the same Nigeria Police Force that initiated an ongoing legal proceedings in Lagos would brazenly rearrest our client who is on bail granted by the court and move him to Abuja.
We call on the Inspector General of Police to put an end to this outrageous charade and egregious abuse of the legal process and order the immediate release of Seaking.
The fact that the Nigeria Police Force that is supposed to be Nigeria’s primary law enforcement agency is actively leading the assault on the rule of law is evidence of the alarming state of impunity and lawlessness in the country.

My chilling encounter with an elderly woman, yesterday, has left me seriously worried about the depth of insensitivity that characterises our political and institutional leadership in Nigeria.
While interacting with the management and students of Shanahan College of Nursing Sciences, Nsukka, during my official visit to the institution, I noticed this elderly woman struggling desperately to talk to me.
People around tried to push her away and shun her into silence, but I instantly requested to have a word with her and hear her story.
She introduced herself as a retired civil servant who devoted the productive years of her life working for the nation.
She lamented that for a while her pension had not been paid. What was more heartbreaking was that she had been sick and admitted to the hospital for over a week, with medical bills, but her immediate worry was that she did not even have one Naira to buy food.
I felt a surge of anger and pity. Anger at leaders like me, who out of greed and insatiable desperation for material acquisition, have made life a living hell for others, by denying them the fruits of their labour. And then pity for the poor elderly woman, and many others like her whose painful stories may never be heard.
That is the nation we live in. A nation that has lost its sense of humanity and compassion.
I have said it before, and I still maintain, that any government that withholds the pensions and gratuities of our senior citizens in their vulnerable years, is wicked. As a Governor, I inherited and paid off over N30 billion in pensions and gratuities accumulated over the years, because I understood the pain the elderly citizens were going through.
I instantly gave her my little support and promised to follow up her case with the hospital management.
However, I am more concerned with the many others like her, dying in silence in many parts of the nation, because no one can speak for them. We must fix this nation. Nigeria must work for all, and everyone will get their due rewards for their productive contributions.
A New Nigeria is POssible. -PO
