A lot of our insecurities around speaking up in the work place stem from our childhood. As a Nigerian child, I remember being told several times to keep quiet while adults were speaking. I’ve had to address this with my inner child and let her know her voice was and is valid.

In other words, Nigerian / African parents - stop telling your kids to shut up or be quiet. You are not teaching them, you are stifling them.
