Unfortunately there is no short answers for this so here are my top 14:

1. Lead Poisoning: Exposure to lead, especially in childhood, can reduce impulse control and increase aggression, making people more susceptible to emotionally charged, populist rhetoric. (Since 1923 tetraethyl lead use in gasoline to 1996, globally to 2021)

2. Lack of Education: Limited access to quality education reduces critical thinking skills, leaving people more vulnerable to misinformation and simplistic political messages like Trump’s. (Tax driven education system)

3. Lack of Mental Health Policies: Inadequate mental health care has led to rising rates of disorders like schizophrenia, fostering feelings of isolation and making populist leaders more appealing. (Too many health issues go undiagnosed)

4. Rural Isolation: Rural voters often feel disconnected from political power, and Trump’s promises to focus on their concerns resonated with those feeling neglected. (Lack of social interactions leads to othering)

5. Drug Use: The opioid crisis and increased drug abuse in rural areas have deepened social despair, driving support for Trump’s promises to address systemic failures. (Also part of the Mental Health Crisis)

6. Economic Anxiety: Job losses and stagnant wages due to globalization fueled support for Trump’s pledges to restore American jobs and industries. (Poor areas are still poor)

7. Racism and Xenophobia: Trump’s anti-immigrant stance and "law and order" rhetoric appealed to individuals feeling threatened by demographic and cultural shifts. (Institutional Racism)

8. Misogyny: Trump’s traditional, patriarchal views and derogatory comments about women attracted support from those resistant to changing gender roles. (Women are second class citizens)

9. Distrust of Government and Elites: Widespread distrust in institutions helped Trump’s outsider narrative resonate, especially among those who felt betrayed by traditional politics. (They are making hurricanes)

10. Media Influence and Fox News: Fox News amplified Trump’s messaging, reinforcing pro-Trump narratives and deepening support through biased coverage. "Conservative media" downplays Trump's legal issues, creating an echo chamber that reinforces his supporters’ views. The continued victim narrative portrays Trump as the target of a “witch hunt,” and his base sees the indictments as proof of this. (They lie to their audience to that their owners can get tax breaks under republican administrations)

11. Foreign Influence and Troll Farms: Russian, Chinese, and Indian troll farms spread disinformation and stoked political divisions online, amplifying Trump’s support. (Trolls on X and Facebook since 2016 including Elon Musk. There have been reports suggesting that individuals linked to Russian oligarchs, specifically the sons of Petr Aven and Vadim Moshkovich, were involved in the acquisition of Twitter (now X) through the venture capital firm 8VC. Aven and Moshkovich are well-known figures with ties to Russia’s political elite and have been under Western sanctions due to their connections with Vladimir Putin. Russia needs Trump win to be able to attack other border countries with impunity and win in Ukraine)

12. Paid Social Media Influencers: Foreign adversaries also funded social media influencers to spread pro-Trump narratives and misinformation, reinforcing his appeal. (Most recently RT, a Russian state media company, of covertly funding a Tennessee-based content creation group. )

13. Identity Politics: Trump has created a strong sense of identity for his base, and attacks on him are seen as attacks on their values and way of life. (Cult of Personality)

14: Political Polarization: Extreme partisanship leads to loyalty that outweighs concerns over personal misconduct. (See all of the above)
