@TyneSnapper@jilltowers Sorry Steve, I just realised this was a question. He had an unmarked shop across the road on Worswick street. More of an overflow storage area than an actual shop. Shows how low rents would have been though.
@TyneSnapper@jilltowers Steel Wheels was near there for a bit as well before they went to where the upstairs of the Five Swans is now I think. Was on the corner. Maybe they had both shops at the same time, I can’t remember fully but I’m sure that one was before the one near Sgt Peppers.
@TyneSnapper@jilltowers Yeah, it goes in cycles doesn’t it. Places get run into the ground then get a load of investment. It’s looking great nowadays but it wasn’t somewhere most people would think of even going near back then. Even the Odeon area further up became a mess really.
@jilltowers@TyneSnapper Compared to what it is now, it was worse than Westgate Rd. Closed shops and disused buildings, the monkey bar was pretty rough and ready, lady greys was a football pub, the bus station around the corner was a state, the bank was closed, there was just nothing happening there.
@jilltowers@TyneSnapper He had a place across the road where the new Stack is now as well. Got my Amiga 1200 from there years ago. Until recently that area has kind of been the arse end of town. There were a load of similar shops up Westgate Rd.
@swinburne_mark Absolutely! It was one of the cheapest pints so used to fit my budget nicely in my younger days. 😆
Shared this video a little while ago but there’s some of the old McEwans adverts along with some others here: https://t.co/HkWlTlSM81
@TyneSnapper They look edible, just a bit crispy on the outside. Saying that, if I’d paid for a breakfast and they arrived then it’d could come down to how much it had cost.
@neheritagelib Nice find. It could be salting and smoking but not a kipper as we know them - which includes a specific cut and process. There are a couple versions called the Red Herring and Bloater that are whole smoked fish that could very likely have been produced there.
@TyneSnapper@neheritagelib Could well be Steve. There would have been a lot of smoking and salting going on as well no doubt that may not have been the “kipper”, this may have prompted the idea for it though.
Whilst considering the geordie habit of saying 'eeee' at the beginning of sentences, it got me thinking about words geordies use at the end of sentences for no reason... 'wasn't me, like' 'wouldn't do that mind' 'here man' and ' i love it, me'.
@JHCPAL
