Editors and Senior Health Reporters Trained on Demographic Trends and Why They Matter

The National Council for Population and Development has convened a two-day training for Editors and Senior Health Reporters on demographic trends and their significance to Kenya’s development agenda.

The training, facilitated by Population Reference Bureau @PRBAfrica
and @bbcmediaaction and sponsored by Palladium under the Women’s Integrated Sexual Health @FCDOGovUK , brings together media practitioners to strengthen reporting on population and development issues.
Speaking during the opening session at a Nairobi hotel, NCPD Acting Director General Ms. Lucy Kimondo called on journalists to focus on stories that offer hope and highlight issues affecting population and development in the country.
While acknowledging that political stories often dominate media coverage, Ms. Kimondo emphasized the need for increased attention to issues that shape society’s values and development outcomes.
She noted that promoting positive values from an early age contributes significantly to reducing societal challenges, including corruption, and helps build a more responsible and productive citizenry.
“As an institution mandated to undertake public education on population and development matters, NCPD is committed to working closely with the media for the common good of the country,” said Ms. Kimondo.
She further assured journalists that the Council is ready to provide reliable data and evidence to support impactful reporting, particularly human-interest stories that bring population and development issues closer to the public.
During the discussions, editors urged technical institutions to simplify complex information and make data more accessible to the public. They also encouraged greater emphasis on grassroots stories that reflect the realities and aspirations of communities across the country.
The training seeks to enhance media understanding of demographic trends and their implications for health, education, employment, urbanization, and sustainable development, ultimately fostering informed public discourse and evidence-based reporting.

Day 3 of the technical workshop on the inclusion of comprehensive Family Planning services in the Social Health Authority (SHA) benefits package.

Convened by @NCPD_Kenya with support from @UNFPA , the workshop brought together stakeholders to review existing health financing streams, identify gaps in Family Planning coverage in SHA, and develop recommendations for the inclusion of a comprehensive package of FP services, commodities, and devices under SHA.

Participants underscored the importance of Family Planning as a cost-effective intervention that reduces unintended pregnancies, lowers maternal and newborn mortality, and contributes to improved health, social, and economic outcomes.

The finalized technical brief will be submitted to the Benefits Package and Tariffs Advisory Panel (BPTAP) and the Social Health Authority for consideration as Kenya advances towards Universal Health Coverage and family planning commodity security.

Equity, Access, and Choice Remain Central to Women's Empowerment and Sustainable Development.

The National Council for Population and Development , with support from UNFPA, today convened key stakeholders to develop recommendations on the integration of Family Planning services into Kenya's Social Health Insurance framework.
The initiative seeks to enhance access to quality family planning services, contributing to improved health outcomes for women and girls while advancing national development goals through increased healthcare coverage.
Speaking during the meeting held in Nairobi, Ms. Fidelis Ndung'u, Deputy Director in charge of Advocacy at NCPD reaffirmed the Council’s commitment to advocating for increased investment in family planning as a critical intervention in reducing maternal mortality.
She noted that family planning contributes significantly to lowering healthcare costs associated with antenatal care, child delivery, and post-abortion care services.
On her part, Ms. Beatrice Okundi, Assistant Director of Population, underscored the need to develop a technical brief on the inclusion of family planning within public sector health financing streams, particularly under the Social Health Authority (SHA). She described the initiative as a strategic investment that will strengthen Kenya's health system and accelerate progress towards achieving universal access to reproductive health services.
The meeting brought together representatives from key government ministries and agencies that play a critical role in the financing, planning, and implementation of family planning programmes in Kenya.

This initiative empowers journalists with small grants and resources to report boldly and accurately on Women’s Integrated Sexual and Reproductive Health (WISH) Policy and Systems. NCPD, in collaboration with RHNK, CRR and ICRW, today held a Data Validation Meeting on the Adolescent Sexual and Reproductive and Maternal Health Baseline Assessment conducted in the five Her Health Initiative counties of Garissa, Tana River, Samburu, Homa Bay and West Pokot.
Speaking on behalf of Ag. DG Ms. Lucy Kimondo, Deputy Director, Advocacy Ms. Fidelis Ndung'u emphasized the importance of data in informing policy, planning and programming for adolescents and young women.
The findings will help shape targeted interventions as the Her Health Initiative enters its second year of implementation.
The Ag. DG called for strengthened efforts to eliminate teenage pregnancies, child marriage, FGM and preventable maternal health conditions, noting that investing in girls and women is investing in the nation's future.

NCPD Hosts High-Level Somali Delegation on Benchmarking Visit.

The National Council for Population and Development today hosted a high-level delegation from the Federal Government of Somalia led by Hon. Mohamud A. Sheikh Farah, Minister of Planning, Investment and Economic Development, on a benchmarking visit aimed at strengthening population and development coordination.

The visit provided an opportunity for knowledge exchange on Kenya's experience in population policy development, demographic data utilization, governance structures, and multi-sectoral coordination as Somalia advances efforts to establish a National Council for Population and Development.
Speaking during the visit, NCPD Acting Director General Ms. Lucy Kimondo welcomed the delegation and underscored the importance of regional collaboration in addressing shared development priorities.
"We are delighted to host our colleagues from Somalia and share Kenya's experiences in population and development planning. Through collaboration and knowledge exchange, African countries can strengthen institutions, harness demographic opportunities, and accelerate sustainable development for the benefit of our people," said Ms. Kimondo.

The benchmarking visit is aimed to strengthen institutional capacity, promote evidence-based planning, and lay the foundation for continued collaboration between Kenya and Somalia on population and development matters.

The final leg towards the actualization of the Kenya Population Integrated Monitoring & Evaluation System.
This online platform is an innovative digital platform designed to transform population management. @NCPD_Kenya is finalizing the platform by centralizing critical data on fertility, mortality, migration, and population health and environment.
Its unified architecture eliminates fragmented reporting to provide real-time population data through a futuristic intelligence platform that fosters seamless interoperability across all 47 counties, MDAs, and partners thereby reducing reporting lags and eliminating demographic bottlenecks.
Crucially, the system will strengthen NCPD’s capacity to track the Demographic Dividend and coordinate ICPD commitments reporting efficiently.
To ensure robust decision-making and sustainable implementation, NCPD will be involving all stakeholders—including National and County governments, CSOs, and Development Partners like the ICT Authority, Palladium, and Plan International among others to ensure the coordination of all population programmes and actors are aligned to the Government development agenda and international commitments.
