Hocevar Snags Brickyard 400 Pole, Takes Aim at Joe Gibbs Racing in Spicy Post-Qualifying Jab

INDIANAPOLIS — Spire Motorsports dominated Saturday’s NASCAR Cup Series qualifying session at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, locking down a front-row sweep for the prestigious Brickyard 400. But while Carson Hocevar’s lap was enough to earn him the biggest pole position of his young career, his post-session remarks were what truly turned heads across the garage.
​Hocevar laid down a blistering 186.598 mph lap (48.232 seconds) in his No. 77 Chevrolet to edge out teammate Daniel Suárez for the top spot, with fellow Spire teammate Michael McDowell lining up sixth.
​When asked about the breakthrough speed for the organization on such a massive stage, the 23-year-old couldn't resist throwing shade at Joe Gibbs Racing amidst an ongoing off-track legal battle between the two teams.

​“This is hometown for [co-owner] Jeff [Dickerson] and everybody at Spire. Yeah, it’s just fun to use our own notes for the last two years and get these cars better and faster,” Hocevar said with a smirk. “Just enjoying it. These guys work really hard.”

​The Backdrop: Lawsuits and Setup Sheets
​Hocevar’s dry comment was a direct reference to the high-profile lawsuit filed by Joe Gibbs Racing earlier this season. JGR filed legal action against former competition director Chris Gabehart following his departure for Spire Motorsports, alleging that Gabehart possessed and transferred confidential setup data and proprietary notes to his new employer.

​JGR's legal team argued in court filings that Spire’s rapid ascension into a front-running contender was aided by stolen data rather than organic development.

​By pointedly emphasizing that Spire was using “our own notes for the last two years,” Hocevar delivered a fiery publicly televised rebuttal to JGR's legal claims on one of racing's highest-profile stages.

The Clash Leaving Bowman Gray? What It Means for NASCAR and Winston

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — According to a report, NASCAR is expected to move The Clash away from Bowman Gray Stadium after two successful seasons, with the preseason exhibition race reportedly headed to Daytona International Speedway on February 13, 2027.

If confirmed, the move would end a memorable chapter that reintroduced one of NASCAR's most unique venues to a national audience.

Bowman Gray Stadium quickly became one of the sport's most talked-about stops after hosting The Clash in 2025 and 2026. Known as "The Madhouse," the quarter-mile stadium delivered close-quarters racing, heated rivalries, and an atmosphere unlike any other venue on the NASCAR schedule. The event also brought thousands of fans into Winston-Salem and shined a national spotlight on one of NASCAR's most historic tracks.

The 2026 edition wasn't without challenges. A major winter storm forced NASCAR to reschedule the race, creating logistical hurdles for teams, fans, and the city. Despite those obstacles, the event still highlighted Bowman Gray's passionate fan base and deep racing heritage.

While reports indicate The Clash is moving to Daytona, questions remain about NASCAR's long-term plans for Bowman Gray.

Winston-Salem Assistant City Manager Ben Rowe said the NASCAR schedule is still being finalized and emphasized that the city continues to have a strong working relationship with NASCAR.

"The city has a great partnership with NASCAR on managing the racing operations at Bowman Gray Stadium, so we look forward to continuing to work together in the future."

That statement is significant because the City of Winston-Salem and NASCAR signed an agreement in 2025 centered around bringing NASCAR competition to Bowman Gray Stadium. Public documents have also indicated that financing for the stadium's new video board included expectations that NASCAR would continue racing at the facility, helping generate the high-profile events needed to support the investment.

Even if The Clash leaves, that doesn't necessarily mean NASCAR is finished with Bowman Gray. The speedway remains one of the most historic short tracks in America and continues to play an important role in grassroots racing.

Moving The Clash to Daytona would also create a different kind of season-opening atmosphere. Holding the exhibition race at Daytona just one week before the Daytona 500 could transform Speedweeks into an even bigger celebration for fans already making the trip to Florida.

Whether fans prefer the close-quarters chaos of Bowman Gray or the spectacle of Daytona, one thing is certain: The Clash has become one of NASCAR's most anticipated preseason events.

For many fans in North Carolina, however, Bowman Gray's return to the national stage reignited memories of the sport's roots. If this truly marks the end of The Clash at "The Madhouse," it will be remembered as a successful two-year run that showcased why short-track racing remains at the heart of NASCAR.

I grew up watching NASCAR beside my grandpa. Every Sunday we'd sit together, and those races became some of my favorite memories. When we lost him, racing wasn't the same. For a long time, I walked away. I lost him right about the time of Dale Sr.
