The Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) has commenced the flag-off ceremony for the reconstruction of the failed Ajomata/Ibada Elume–Amukpe–Oghara section of the Effurun–Benin Expressway in Sapele Local Government Area of Delta State.

The intervention is aimed at restoring the critical road corridor, improving connectivity, easing the movement of people and goods, and enhancing economic activities across the region.

NDDC Advances Digital Capacity through Practical AI Training

The Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) has strengthened youth capacity in digital innovation through a two-day practical training on Artificial Intelligence, Digital Content Creation and Innovation, held at the LA Kings Dome, Port Harcourt.

The event brought together young participants from across the Niger Delta region and expert facilitators to provide practical training, hands-on exposure and build capacity in emerging digital technologies, creative tools and entrepreneurial opportunities.

Speaking at the event, the Executive Director, Corporate Services, Hon. Ifedayo Abegunde, expressed appreciation to the Managing Director/CEO, Chief Samuel Ogbuku PhD, and the NDDC Governing Board for approving the training. He emphasised the importance the Commission places on ensuring that youths acquire practical, relevant and future-ready digital skills, noting that the event provided a valuable platform for participants to engage directly with industry experts and gain the skills needed to develop their creative and business ventures.

The session featured practical and live demonstrations led by facilitators, Mrs. Stephanie Oghenene and Mr. Kalada Briggs, who taught participants the practicals on how to create faceless YouTube videos, write and produce e-books, and generate original music using AI tools.

The initiative highlights the Commission’s ongoing commitment to equipping young people across the Niger Delta with practical skills, fostering innovation and creating sustainable opportunities that will enable them thrive in the emerging digital economy.

NDDC MD/CEO, Chief Samuel Ogbuku, PhD, Elevated to Fellow of NIM

The Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), Chief Samuel Ogbuku, PhD, has been elevated to the prestigious Fellowship of the Nigerian Institute of Management (Chartered) FNIM, the highest professional membership grade of the Institute.

The conferment took place at the 2026 Fellows’ Award and Spouses’ Day, held in Lagos as part of activities marking the Institute’s 65th Anniversary.

The elevation recognises Chief Ogbuku’s leadership, professional excellence and contributions to national development.

Directors of the NDDC were also honoured with awards at the ceremony, further highlighting the recognition of excellence and service within the Commission.

Present at the event was the Chief of the Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Idi Abbas, who was among the distinguished personalities honoured during the ceremony.

The event brought together notable leaders, professionals and public servants to celebrate excellence, leadership and outstanding contributions to society.

NDDC Commences Practical AI Training for Young Niger Deltans

The Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), through its Department of Information Technology & Innovation (IT&I), has commenced a practical Artificial Intelligence (AI) training for young graduates and unemployed Niger Deltans in Port Harcourt, aimed at equipping participants with digital skills for employment, entrepreneurship and innovation.

Declaring the training open on behalf of the Managing Director/CEO, Chief Samuel Ogbuku, PhD, Rev. Obegha Oworibo said the Commission remains committed to building the human capacity required to drive sustainable development in the Niger Delta. The Director of IT&I, Engr. Emeka Ani, described the programme as an investment in the future of the region.

Resource persons on Day One included Professor Oyenuga Adedeji and Stephanie Ufuoma Oghenene who took participants through practical aspects of AI, digital innovation and emerging opportunities.

The training is part of the Commission’s efforts to empower young people with relevant skills, foster innovation and create sustainable opportunities across the Niger Delta.

NDDC Attends Bonny Island Tourism and Investment Summit

One of Rivers State’s historic islands, Bonny Island, is positioning tourism as a major pillar of its economy, with the launch of an ambitious three-year plan to transform the kingdom into a premier global tourism destination.

known as the Discover Bonny Initiative, the plan was unveiled during the opening ceremony of the Bonny Island Tourism and Investment Summit, which held at the NLNG Conference Centre, Bonny.

The event was organised by the Bonny Chamber of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture (BCCIMA) under the theme, “Bonny Island: Transforming into a Premier Global Destination" and christened the “Orange Economy” Summit.

The event attracted key stakeholders from government, business, traditional institutions and the private sector, with discussions focused on unlocking Bonny Island’s tourism, cultural and investment potential.

The Managing Director/CEO of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), Chief Samuel Ogbuku PhD, was represented at the event by the Director, Commercial and Industrial Development, Mrs Lyna Okara.

Also in attendance was the traditional ruler of Grand Bonny Kingdom, King Edward Asimini William Dappa Pepple III, alongside other distinguished guests and stakeholders.

NDDC Inaugurates Committee to Review Staff Terms and Conditions of Service

The Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) has inaugurated a Committee to negotiate and review the Commission Staff's Terms and Conditions of Service, in line with current realities, organisational needs and applicable government regulations.

Representing the Managing Director/CEO, Chief Samuel Ogbuku, PhD, was the Executive Director, Finance and Administration, Alabo (Hon.) Boma Iyaye, who welcomed members of the Committee and expressed Management’s appreciation to the MD/CEO for approving the review committee and demonstrating commitment to staff welfare.

He described the inauguration as an important step in ensuring that the Commission Staff's Terms and Conditions of Service remain relevant, responsive and aligned with the evolving needs of the organisation.

Also speaking, the Director of Administration and Human Resources, Mr Kelechi Nwelue, noted that regular review of the Commission’s policies and Staff Terms and Conditions of Service, within the stipulated three-year period, was necessary. He charged the committee to approach the task with dedication, stressing that their assignment was significant to the continued growth, productivity and welfare of NDDC staff.

NDDC Advances Women’s Economic Empowerment on International Women’s Day

The Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), through its Department of Culture and Women Affairs, in collaboration with Indigo Bloom, commemorated the 2026 International Women’s Day in Asaba, Delta State, with a renewed call for the economic empowerment of women. Held under the theme “Rights, Justice, Action for Women and Girls,” the programme brought together women and key stakeholders to promote entrepreneurship, business growth and sustainable livelihood.

Speaking at the event, the Director, Culture and Women Affairs, Mrs. Ahunna Imoni, urged women to embrace opportunities for personal and economic growth through entrepreneurship and continuous learning. She also commended the Chairman of the NDDC Governing Board, Mr. Chiedu Ebie, Esq., and the Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer, Chief Samuel Ogbuku, PhD, for their unwavering support for women-focused initiatives across the Niger Delta.

Board Secretary, Niger Delta Chambers of Commerce, Industry, Trade, Mines and Agriculture (NDCCITMA), Chief Solomon Edebiri, PhD, delivered a lecture on entrepreneurship and women’s economic empowerment, while representatives of the Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON), the National Agency for Food, Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), the Nigerian Export Promotion Council (NEPC) and the Nigerian Stored Products Research Institute (NSPRI) trained participants on business registration, regulatory compliance, product quality, value addition and business development.

MD/CEO NDDC JOINS DIGNITARIES ON INSPECTION TOUR OF AZIKEL REFINERY

The Managing Director/CEO of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), Chief Samuel Ogbuku, PhD, joined dignitaries on an inspection tour of the soon-to-be-completed 25,000-barrel-per-day Azikel Refinery at Obunagha in Bayelsa State.

The inspection coincided with the arrival of the Crude Distillation Unit (CDU), a major milestone in the development of the refinery and a critical component in the refining of crude oil into products such as petrol, diesel, kerosene and aviation fuel.

Among dignitaries present were the Governor, Senator Douye Diri who was represented by the Deputy Governor Pastor Peter Akpe, Ph.D.; former First Lady of Nigeria, Dr. Patience Jonathan; Chairman, Bayelsa State Council of Traditional Rulers, King Bubaraye Dakolo; Group President, Azikel Group, Dr. Godbless Eruani, CFR; Vice President, Azikel Group, Engr. Presley Asemota; and Dr. Isaac Yalah, among other distinguished guests.

Chief Ogbuku commended Dr. Eruani for his perseverance and commitment to the project, recalling that he attended the groundbreaking ceremony eight years ago. He described the refinery as an inspiration and a potential catalyst for investment, job creation and economic growth in Bayelsa State, urging Bayelsans, particularly the youths, to actively participate in the opportunities it would create.

He also commended the Bayelsa State Government for improving the road infrastructure leading to the refinery and called for continued support for the project.

With a reported investment of $1 billion, the Azikel Refinery is expected to contribute significantly to industrialisation, employment generation and economic development in Bayelsa State and the wider Niger Delta.

The Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), Chief Samuel Ogbuku, PhD, joined the Bayelsa State Governor, His Excellency, Senator Douye Diri, his wife, Dr Gloria Diri, family members, friends, and distinguished guests at the traditional marriage ceremony of their daughter, Dr Stephanie Ebidenere, and her husband, Ballad Tamaradoubra Agbeyei, at Sampou Community, Bayelsa State.

The ceremony brought together prominent Nigerians, including the Chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum and Governor of Kwara State, Engr AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq; the Governor of Delta State, Elder Sheriff Oborevwori; former First Lady of Nigeria, Dame Patience Jonathan; several First Ladies; and other distinguished guests.

Chief Ogbuku congratulated the newlyweds and prayed for a marriage filled with love, peace, understanding, fruitfulness, and God's enduring grace.

The NDDC MD/CEO also wished the couple a fulfilling life together, expressing hope that their union would remain a source of joy and blessing to their families, Bayelsa State, the Niger Delta, and Nigeria.

The Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), through it's Department of Culture and Women Affairs under the Directorate of Youth, Sports, Culture and Women Affairs, commemorated International Women's Day with an impactful programme held across the Niger Delta region.

The event attracted a large number of women's organisations and stakeholders from across the region. It underscored the importance of empowering women and the girl-child while highlighting their vital role in societal development.

The programme featured resource persons and representatives from various government institutions, including the National Agency for Food, Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), the Nigerian Export Promotion Council (NEPC), and the Niger Delta Chamber of Commerce.

In his opening remarks, the Director, Rivers State Office, Engr. Okezie Ule, who was represented by Amb. Eme Ikechi, acknowledged women as the bedrock of society. He noted that any society that values and invests in its women is sowing valuable seeds that will yield lasting benefits for generations to come.

The keynote address was delivered by the Director of Culture and Women Affairs, Mrs Ahunna Imoni. Speaking at an empowerment programme commemorating International Women's Day, the Director, Culture and Women Affairs, Mrs Imoni Ahunna, challenged women to move beyond discussions and take practical steps towards economic independence through dedication, continuous learning, and the dignity of labour.

Participants received practical training from experts from the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), the Niger Delta Chambers of Commerce, Industry, Trade, Mines and Agriculture (NDCCITMA), and the Nigerian Export Promotion Council (NEPC) on business registration, product branding, regulatory compliance, and export procedures.

The training was designed to help women formalise their businesses, improve product quality and packaging, access new markets, and compete effectively in the global marketplace, thereby creating wealth for their families, communities, and the nation.

The workshop trained 300 women across Bayelsa and Delta States, equipping traditional birth attendants with enhanced knowledge and practical skills to support safer pregnancy, childbirth, and postnatal care. The initiative is part of a broader programme that will be implemented across all nine Niger Delta states, extending its impact throughout the region.

The workshop was designed to enhance the knowledge and skills of traditional birth attendants, promote safer childbirth practices, strengthen collaboration with healthcare professionals, and contribute to reducing maternal and infant mortality across the region.
