Now here’s something special.
As young children gradually internalize their inner dialogue, preschoolers often say the quiet parts out loud - offering us direct windows on their thinking.
This video is a great example. As little Bella works to overcome her fear of jumping, we’re able to listen in on both her feelings (“I’m afraid”) and efforts at self-coaching (“Okay… I’ll just try this… I GOT THIS!”).
Educational psychologist Lev Vygotsky called this “private speech.”
Bella’s private speech happens out loud, but isn’t really intended for anyone else’s ears.
She’s working through her own emotions/anxiety. And in time, what we’re hearing in this video will mostly be taking place inside her head.
Pretty cool, huh?
