The statue of Athena Parthenos was crafted by Athen’s most celebrated sculptor, Phidias. This statue, made of gold and ivory, stood inside the Parthenon and was considered one of the wonders of the ancient world.

The story goes that after completing the statue, Phidias asked the Athenian leader, Pericles, for his opinion. Pericles remarked that the statue seemed to be holding its spear too aggressively, as if ready for war, which might provoke the city's enemies.

Phidias responded by pointing out that, from the ground level, the perspective of those looking up at the statue would alter their view, making the spear appear as if it were at rest, thus symbolizing Athena's role not only as a warrior goddess but also as a protector of the city, embodying both strength and peace.
