Governor Jim Pillen has requested a major disaster declaration after Nebraska’s March–April wildfires (Morrill, Cottonwood, Ashby, Minor) burned more than 821,000 acres.
Preliminary FEMA and NEMA estimates put losses at nearly $9.7 million.

State agencies have been released; local fire departments now managing response.

The wildfire has burned an estimated 9,141 acres and is 45 percent contained. While donations to support fire crews are appreciated, additional donations are not being requested at this time.

A prescribed burn is planned for around 1 p.m. today in the Anselmo Fire District, located in northwest Custer County.
You may see smoke in the area. This is a planned and controlled operation.

Fire danger ramps up again Wednesday, driven primarily by strong winds out of the northwest that will gust as strong as 30-40 mph. Avoid open burning & be careful with outdoor equipment that may cause a spark.
Our state still faces a significant wildfire threat.
Today, I issued a proclamation to ensure that Nebraska National Guard resources are ready and available to respond to wildfires, should they be needed. High winds, low humidity, and dry conditions continue to be a concern and could produce dangerous conditions.
Protecting the citizens of Nebraska is my number one priority. We are ensuring that resources are ready to combat fires and safeguard lives and property. I have full confidence in Adjutant General Strong to lead our state’s disaster response with efficiency and effectiveness.
