Autism Rates:
1 in 36 eight-year-olds (2.8%) had autism in 2020. A jump up from 1 in 44 (2.3%) in 2018Trusted Source.

Several factors contribute to this increase:

1. Improved Awareness & Diagnosis:
There's now more awareness and understanding of autism, which leads more people to seek assessments and diagnosis.
In 2006, the American Academy of Pediatrics recommended that all children between 18 and 24 months of age must be screened for autism during routine pediatrician visits

2. Broader Diagnostic Criteria:
The criteria for diagnosing autism have broadened, encompassing a spectrum of symptoms and behaviors, resulting in more diagnoses.(Transition from Autism to Autism Spectrum Disorder).

3. Better Access to Services: Increased access to healthcare and special education services encourage early detection and diagnosis.

4. Environmental Factors:
Some studies suggest that environmental factors, including parental age, might contribute, though their roles are not fully understood.
Survival of very premature babies (prematurity is a risk factor) is more common now than before.

5) Increasing Diagnosis in Minority Population:
Better Access resources have led to minority population leading to increased diagnosis.
