Castlevania released on NES in the US 37 years ago on April 30, 1987! 🎉 Konami initially released it for Famicom on 9/26/86.
Game director Hitoshi Akamatsu approached game development with a cinematic eye, hoping to evoke the air of classic horror films. This game follows whip cracking Simon Belmont, the descended from a clan of a vampire hunters. Comprised of 18 levels across 6 stages, players use their whip in addition to holy water, boomerang crosses, and more as they navigate this platformer. Players face horror staples like a Mummy Man, Frankenstein, and ultimately “The Count” Dracula.
I must confess…my 1st introduction to Simon was the vain rendition in Captain N 🤭 I didn’t own Castlevania myself, and 1st played the DOS version with the same friend I played Double Dragon with after school. We definitely never got to Dracula as kids, but we thought we had so much fun stumbling through it together.
This is one on my list of childhood games I’d love to beat someday! ❤️
